Tryphena<\/a> is a 3 x great grandmother of mine. Her grandson who she appoints as executor is my great grandfather. I assume it is the one she leaves a bequest to, though perhaps she should have been clearer; her son-in-law and great grandson shared the same name!<\/p>\n

Tryphena was survived by a daughter, 2 grandsons and 3 great grandchildren, but apart from the bequest to one of her grandsons she only seems to have left bequests to friends. I thought that these people might be relations and they can be found “on” my tree, but not linked to it. Given the extent to which people in the South Hams were related it is quite likely they were distant relations, but with no relationship found I suspect the reason they benefitted was friendship. Both the Jeffreys and Blanche Edmonds<\/a> were neighbours of Tryphena.<\/p>\n

That said, since there is no mention of what is to happen to any money or goods not mentioned, it is possible her daughter would have inherited that, as though Tryphena had died intestate.<\/p>\n

I seem to have the original of this will. It is written on a form with some words printed on it – the printed words are shown here in inverted commas.<\/p>\n

“This is the last will and testament of me” Tryphena Issell “of” Stokenham “in the county of” Devon.“I hereby revoke all wills by me, at any time heretofore made, and declare this to be my last will and Testament. I appoint” James Bartlett Hambling (grandson) of Stoke Fleming, Devon“to be Execut”er “of this my Will, and direct that all my just Debts and Funeral and Testamentary Expenses shall be paid as soon as conveniently may be after my decease.”“I give and bequeath” to James Bartlett Hambling the large cupboard standing in kitchen clock and bracket and large table in kitchen the bedstead in front bed room tie, bolster and 2 pillows and four blankets and dressing drawers and glass and the clock in said room<\/p>\n

To Ann Jeffrey<\/a> of Stokenham the arm chair in front kitchen and 2 Yelmpton chairs<\/a> in said room the 2 long drawers in front bed room and all the contents thereof and all matting and mats.<\/p>\n

To Martha Jeffery<\/a> of Stokenham 2 mahogany chairs in front kitchen and cupboard in back kitchen and one chair for May Jeffery<\/a> and one for Maurice Jeffery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To Arthur Jeffery<\/a> Box of contents on side table in front kitchen, cooking utencilss and contents of pantry to be divided between Ann Jeffery and Martha Jeffery.<\/p>\n

To Blanch Edmonds of Dartmouth the drawers and washstand ware in back bedroom.<\/p>\n

“Dated this” 18th “day of” November “in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred” and Eight<\/p>\n

“Signed” Tryphena Issell<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
