In the name of God Amen<\/span>
\nI Richard Rose of Wotten Fitzpayne in the County of Dorsett Esquire beinge weake
\nof body but I prayse God of stronge and perfect memorie doe make this my
\nlast will and Testament as followeth Inprimis I commend my Soule unto
\nAllmighty God in an assured faith and confidence through Jesus Christ that
\nwith these eyes I shall see him And my body to be buried by my late deceased
\nwife in the Church of Wotten aforesaid Item I declare that my brother
\nin lawe Francis Harvey<\/a> hath ingaged himselfe to mee by bonds and other
\ndeedes to the value of above two Thousand poundes and the absolute Inheri=
\ntance to mee and my heires of that howse wherein hee sometime dwelled
\nin Lyme Regis in the County of Dorsett with all the goods therein by bar=
\ngayne and sale accordinge to an Inventory wherein the said goods are expres=
\nsed under his owne hands In case the said Francis Harvey shall pay to
\nWilliam Ellesdon<\/a> [probably uncle, to whom link leads, but I have not researched if it could be another] of Lyme Regis gent one Hundred Pounds and shall alsoe pay
\nto my executors the summe of Tenn poundes six shillings and twoe pence
\nby mee disbursed or which I shall hereafter lay out for Charges in lawe in
\nhis busineses besides the Hundred poundes to the said William Ellesdon
\nAnd shall acquit mee and my executors of the interest of Fifty poundes
\npayable by bill or bond to his daughter of Susanna Harvey<\/a> [niece] the security therefore
\nwas given to Anthony Ellesden<\/a> [uncle] gent late deceased late deceased and likewise
\ndischarge my executors of such degree or degrees wherein I stand ingaged
\nfor him to John Barcroft of London And likewise of one Bond of Sixe
\nHundred poundes for payment of Three hundred to the said John Barcroft
\nwherein I my brother Thomas Ceely [1] with John Harvey of Chard stand
\nbound as for money borrowed of the said John Barcroft which sume
\nwas never lent by him as by his answeare to my Bill in Chancery
\nappeareth [2] And likewise if hee shall discharge mee of the interest of one
\nBill of Fifty and one poundes my owne proper debt to the said John
\nBarcroft accordinge to a decree the principall beinge formerly paid into
\nthe Chancery and doe procure a generall release for mee my heires
\nexecutors and assignes from him the said John Barcroft his heires
\nand assignes Then my will is that John Rose<\/a> my Sonne doe reconvey
\nto Richard Harvey<\/a> the Sonne of Francis Harvey the Inheritance of the
\nsaid Howse in Lyme Regis and the bargaine sale and Inventory of all
\nhis goods and all other Bondes bills and ingagements (except one Bond
\nof two thousand poundes with covenants for the purchase of certaine lands
\nby a certaine value in the said Covenants expressed by my Sister Joane<\/a>
\nHarvey his late wife deceased to her and her heires Item where as my
\nFather gave twenty poundes to the poore of Lyme to be imployed accordinge
\nto his will And my mother gave them tenn pounds I doe give them
\nTwenty poundes moore the whole Fifty poundes to be imployed either in
\na Brewhowse in the said Towne or in Stocke for the benefitt of the said
\npoore to be paid within two yeares after my death to sett them on
\nworke And in case that it be not soe imployed Then my will is my
\nheires or the Survivour of them shall dispose thereof to such use or
\nuses for the poore under their handes and sealses as they shall thinke
\nfitt Item I give to the poore of Wotten Fitzpayne Twenty pound to bee
\ndisposed for their use and benefitt by the discrecon and judgments of Richard<\/a>
\nRose my Sonne the Minister the Churchwardens and overseers there or the
\nmajor parte of them payable within two yeares after my death Item
\nI give to Henry Rose<\/a> my Sonne and his heires my dwellinge Howse
\nin Lyme Regis nowe in the possession of Amias Shorte preacher in the
\nsaid towne with all the Howsehold Stuffe and lumber therein (except one

\ngreat Spruce Chest in the Hall Chamber and all chaires and stooles in
\nthe said howse which I give to my Sonne John Rose Alsoe I give to
\nmy Sonne Henry Rose and his heires All that howse wherein Christopher
\nCollinges now dwells at Ware with all those Closes and groundes called Ransombes
\nand Cutterleines with their appurtenances, And alsoe all that part and
\nparcell of a Lease granted to mee by Henry Henley esquire for which is
\nto be paid unto him Forty nine shillings yearly as parte of the head
\nRent due to him, The remaynder of the said heard Rent is to be paid
\nto him by William Rose<\/a> my Sonne parte of the which said groundes in
\nthe said Lease are nowe in the tenure and possession of the said
\nChristopher Collines to Sarah Pattison or their assignes hee the said Henrie
\nRose or his executors is to pay unto the said Sarah Pattison the summe
\nof Fifty poundes for which shee now hath the proffitts of a peece of land
\ncalled Beane Close for her security Alsoe I give to my said Sonne Henry
\nRose the rents of one Fullinge mill now in the possession of Richard Lumer
\nor his assignes beinge fower shillings by the yeare And if it soe happen
\nthat my said Sonne Henry Rose dye unmarried and without issue Then
\nI give to John Rose my Sonne and his heires and executors my said
\ndwellinge howse in Lyme with all that Land at Ware in the possession of
\nChristopher Collines with that parte of the Lease given to my Sonne
\nHenry as aforesaid it being lawfull for my sonne Henry to make a Joyn=
\nture of the said Land and Lease unto such wife as hee may have att
\nthe time of his death And if it happen the said howse and Landes
\ncome to my Sonne John Rose for want of issue of the said Henrie
\nRose then the said John Rose and his heires shall have the said land
\nand lease Item I give to my Sonne William Rose and his heires All
\nthose seaven Closes of lande called Capes hill and long Meade nowe in the
\ntenure of John Coy the younger lyinge in the parish of Lyme Regis And
\nalsoe that new howse, orchard barnes stable and all those groundes beinge the
\nremaynder of a Lease granted by Henry Henley Esquire<\/a> [4] for ninty nine yeares
\nhorne in the possession of John Coy the elder And alsoe the
\nrevercon of two howses betweene the said New howse and barne
\nand the rents thereof with power given to the said William Rose
\nto make a joynture to such wise as hee shall marry of all the
\nsaid howses orchard Closes and Landes with their appurtenances
\nAnd if the said William Rose happen to dye without issue of his
\nbody lawfully begotten Then I give to my ^ {youngest} Sonne Thomas Rose<\/a> and
\nhis heires all the said Closes of Land and the remaynder of the
\nsaid Lease bequeathed unto William Rose as aforesaid payinge out
\nof the same Forty nine shillings yearely rent to the said Henry
\nHenley and his heires Item I give to Thomas Rose my youngest sonn
\nand his heires lawfully begotten the Revercon and rent of certaine
\nhowses gardens and landes in Lyme Regis (Vizt) that Close and orchard
\nnow in the possession of Richard Allford the elder And alsoe that howse
\ngarden orchard and land in the tenure and possession of Cornelius
\nBarcon that Bakehowse in the possession of Robert Holden his
\nassigne or assignes And those two howses upon the Stone bridge
\nLeadinge to the walke in the possession of William Reed and Michaell
\nLarcomb And that howse in the possession of Thomas Pazsons and the
\ngarden thereto belonginge And that howse orchard and garden late
\nin the possession of Robert Willington deceased And that acre of land
\nin the possession of Benjamin James or his assignes And one other house
\nwith garden and orchard thereto belonginge in the possession of Baptist
\n[p.3]
\nBennett And that ^ {other} plott of ground adjoyninge now in the possession of Henry
\nIngram and Anthony Spencer And likewise all that long Lease of a tenemt
\ncalled Lilly and herne hill with the Appurtenances in the parish of
\nCharmouth now in the tenure and possession of John Coy his assignee
\nor assignes of which said herne hill Mathew Bragg gent by my
\ndesire and in trust did take the Inheritance and was to reconvey the
\nsame upon request to mee or my assignes And if it happen my Sonn
\nThomas shall dye unmarried and without issue lawfully begotten Then
\nI give and bequeath to Richard Rose my Sonne All the said Tenement
\ncalled Lillye and herne hill and all the remaynder of the Leases thereof
\nand the inheritance thereof to be reconveyed to him by Mathew Bragge
\nas aforesaid And alsoe if hee dye unmarried and without issue lawfully
\nbegotten Then I give to John Rose my Sonne and his heires those landes
\nand howses in Lyme Regis aforesaid given to my Said Sonne Thomas
\nand the Seaven Closes of Land to my Sonne William and his heires
\nif hee dye without issue lawfully begotten. Item I give to him the said
\nThomas Rose Fower hundred poundes to be paid out of the Mannour and
\nFarm: landes of Wotten Fitzpayne now in my possession (that is to saie)
\nTwo hundred poundes to be paid by Richard Rose and his heires seaven
\nyeares after my death And the other Two hundred poundes to be paid
\ntwo yeares after the same And if it happen the said Thomas Rose
\nshall dye beofre anie parte or all of the said legacie is to be paid
\nThen my will is that soe much thereof as is unpaid shall remaine
\nto the use and veto of Richard Rose of the Som[m]es by them to be paid
\nas aforesaid Item I give to John Rose my Sonne my Silver bason
\nand yeare one of the Silver tankard whereon my Coate of Armes is
\ncutt with the bedsteed the best greene furniture and an armed chaire
\nand fower lowe Chaires with a table Cloth and counter pane suiteable
\nand a bed boulster and two pillowes such as hee shall chuse in my now
\ndwellinge howse at Wotten with two paire of the best Sheetes and pillo=
\nties and the bed performed with coverled and the blanketts by them
\nlikewise to be chosen, Item I give unto him the Counter in the
\nparlour Chamber and the trunke which was heretofore his mothers mar=
\nked E: M: And alsoe all such goods and howsehold stuffe in my howse
\nat Morganshayes [5] or in anie of my howses in Colliton parish Item I
\ngive to him one of my best horses or mares Item I give to him
\nand his brother Richard Rose all my wearinge apparrell and bookes
\nto be equally devided betweene them Item I give unto Mary Rose<\/a> and
\nAnne Rose<\/a> her Sister all the wearinge apparrell linninge [linen] and furniture
\nfor horses which were their mothers Item I give to Richard Rose my sonne
\nall such plate and goods and howsehold stuffe which are in my howse at
\nWotten not formerly bequeathed and given Item I give to the said Marie
\nRose my daughter Eleaven hundred poundes lawfull money of England for
\nher marriage porcon one Thousand poundes whereof is to be paid by my
\nSonne John Rose Five hundred poundes thereof hee is to pay to my said
\ndaughter Mary within three monethes after the said John Rose shalbe
\nmarried and the other Five hundred poundes hee is to pay within
\nSixe monethes ^{there} after The other hundred poundes of the said porcon is to be paid
\nby my Sonne Richard Rose within Six monethes after the marriage of
\nthe said Mary Item I give to my daughter Anne for her marriage
\nporcon one Thousand poundes lawfull money of England to be paid by my
\nsaid Sonne John Rose whereof Five hundred poundes is to be paid within
\nSix monethes after her marriage And the other Five hundred pounds with
\n=in Six monethes there after And for the payment of the marriage porcon
\n[p.4]
\nof the said Mary Rose I doe Charge the Mannour and Demeasnes
\nof Morganshayes in Devon in the parish of South Lee and Colliton and
\nupon payment whereof the same is to be discharged And if the marriage
\nporcon of the said Mary be not paid shee shall receive yearely out of
\nthe Rents issues and proffitts of the said Mannour and landes of
\nMorganshayes three yeares after my death Forty poundes by the yeare
\nto be paid quarterly by even porcons And in case John Rose my Sonn
\nshall not marry before my daughter Mary doe accomplish the age of
\nEighteene yeares and shall not satisfie or pay the said Thousand pounds
\nafter her age of eighteene yeares Then it shalbe lawfull for my brothers [in law]
\nChristopher Brodrepp<\/a> and John Brodrepp<\/a> or the Survivour of them to enter
\nand grannt an estate for ninty nine yeares determinable upon three lives
\nof anie parte of the said Mannour and Landes of Morganshayes and the
\nLandes in Colliton for the raisinge and payment of the said Thousand pounds
\nas aforesaid And for and concerninge the porcon given to my ^{said} daughter
\nAnne Rose I doe charge my lands called Bourne hay^{n}es playne whittlye
\nHapper haynes and Freke haynes the which said porcon of one Thousand
\npound if it be not paid, as aforesaid or when shee shall attaine the
\nage of eighteene yeares Then it shalbe lawfull for my said Brother
\nChristopher and John Brodrepp to enter sell and grant soe much of the said
\nLands for ninty nine yeares determinable on three lives for the raysinge
\npayment and satisfying the said porcon of the said Anne Rose And
\nI will that three yeares after my decease my daughter Anne shall
\nreceive out of the rents issues and profitts of the said Landes Thirty
\npoundes by the yeare payable quarterly for her livelyhood and maintenance
\nItem I give unto my daughter Dorothy Rose<\/a> one Thousand pounds law=
\nfull money of England five hundre pound thereof to be paid when hee
\nshall attaine the age of Eighteene yeares And the other five hundred
\npounde six monethes after which money and porcon of one Thousand pound
\nis to be charged on the Mannour and Demeasnes rents and proffitts of
\nWotten Fitzpayne in the County of Dorsett And if my said Sonne
\nRichard Rose doe not pay the said Thousand poundes in manner aforesd
\nThen it shalbe lawfull for my said brother Christopher and John
\nBrodrepp or the Survivour of them to grant Estate by Lease for ninty nine
\nyeares determinable upon three lives upon anie of the Demeasnes or other
\nLandes within the said Mannour for raysinge and payinge the said
\nThousand pound to the said Dorothy Rose in manner aforesaid Item I doe
\ngive to the said Dorothy three yeares after my death Thirty pounds by
\nthe yeare to be paid quarterly to her out of the rents issues and profitts
\nof the said Mannour and demeasnes for her support and livelyhood un=
\n=till the said porcon of one Thousand pounde be paid as aforesaid Item
\nI give to my daughter Elizabeth Rose<\/a> one Thousand poundes for her porcon
\nAnd my will is that the said Mannour Demeasnes and Lands of Wotten
\nFitzpayne be Charged with it to be paid by my Sonne Richard Rose to
\nthe said Elizabeth at the age of Eighteene yeares Five hundred pounds
\nAnd the other five hundred pound six monethes after Item I will that
\nThirty poundes by the yeare be paid to her the said Elizabeth three yeares
\nafter my death out of the rents issues and proffitts of the Demeasnes and
\nLands of the Mannour of Wotten Fitzpayne for her mayntenance And if my
\nsonne Richard Rose doe not pay the said Thowsand poundes to my daughter
\nElizabeth in manner aforesaid Then it shalbe lawfull for my said brothers Chris=
\ntopher Brodrepp and John Brodrepp to enter and grant by Lease for ninty nine
\nyeares determinable upon three lives soe much of anie parte of the Demeasnes
\nand Lands of the Mannour of Wotten Fitzpayne for raysinge and paying the
\n[p.5]
\nporcon aforesaid Item my will is that my Children may live in love and
\nAmity togeather in my howse at Wotten aforesaid upon the rents and prof=
\nfitts of all my Lands and Leases in Wotten Charmouth and Lyme Regis for and
\ndureinge the time of three yeares after my decease, and for and towards their
\nhowse keepeinge and maintenance accordinge to the order and direccons of
\nJohn Rose Thomas Orchard William Phillipps and James Orysley [3] or the major
\npart of them And if anie difference arise the same to be heard and deter=
\n=mined by my brothers Christopher Brodrepp and John Brodrepp or the
\nSurvivour of them And in case they shall not soe live togeather then they
\nshall have for their maintenance out of the said lands as followeth: First
\nI give to my Sonne John as long as hee soe remaynes in my howse at
\nWotten and dyett with his brothers and Sisters Thirty poundes by the yeare
\nfor his necessary uses and the keepeinge of a horse and dyett for a Servant, And
\nif hee shall not live with them then I give unto him Sixty poundes by
\nthe yeare to be paid to him quarterly after such his departure the like
\nyearely maintenance I give to Richard Rose when hee goes to the University
\nor Innes of Court And I give to my Sonne William Rose whilest hee remai=
\n=nes at Wotten Twenty pound a yeare And when hee lives in Oxford Forty
\npoundes to be paid yearely by even porcons Item I give to Henry my sonne
\ntowards his maintenance if hee live at Wotten ^ {[in right margin] Twenty poundes by the yeare] but if hee live else where
\nhee shall have Forty pound yearely to be paid by even porcons Item I give
\nto my daughter Mary Rose twelve poundes by the yeare And to my daugh=
\nter Anne tenn pound To my daughter Dorothy eight pound to my daughter
\nElizabeth eight pound And to my Sonne Thomas eight pound to be paid
\nthem or their guardians out of the said Landes by even porcons for and
\ndureinge three yeares after my death And my will is that if all or any
\nof my said children desire to live in my said howse after the said
\nthree yeares with their brother Richard Rose that they agree with him
\nupon loveinge termes for their entertaynment and dyett And if my Overseers
\nhereafternamed thinke it conveynient to place a broade anie of my fower
\ndaughters or my Sonne Thomas Rose for their better educacon they and
\nevery of them shall have such maintenance out of the said Lands as
\nmy overseers or the major parte of them shall thinke fitt and conveynient
\nItem if it please God that my Sonne John Rose shall marry and aftr<\/sup>.
\nAccordinge to my will shall pay unto Mary Rose my daughter or her
\nguardian the said Thousand poundes of lawfull english money and shee
\nnot haveinge attained the age of eighteene yeares shall happen to dye then
\nmy will is that her said guardian doe within three monethes after
\nsuch her death pay or cause to be paid unto John Rose my Sonne his
\nheires or executors five hundred poundes of the Thousand poundes by him
\nformerly paid And alsoe that the said guardian doe pay the remayninge
\nfive hundred poundes to Richard my Sonne his heires or assignes three
\nmonethes after the death of the said Mary Rose Item if it hapen that
\nAnne Rose my daughter shall dye before shee attaine the age of eighteene
\nyeares Then my will is that for her marriage porcon of one Thousand
\npound which John Rose my Sonne is to pay unto her That five hundred pound
\nthereof shall remayne to the use and benefitt of the said John Rose my
\nSonne And the other five hundred pound the said John Rose his heires
\nexecutors or assignes is to pay unto Richard Rose my Sonne his heires and
\nassignes within Six monethes after the said Anne Rose might have attained
\nthe age of eighteene yeares Item it is my will that if it happen that
\nDorothy Rose or Elizabeth Rose my daughters dye before their age of eighteene
\nyeares that then the porcon of either of them to be paid by my sonne
\nRichard Rose shalbe equally devided betweene John Rose and Richard Rose my
\n[p.6]
\nSonnes their executors or assignes within three monethes after the tyme that
\nthey might have attained the age of Eighteene yeares. Item my will is that
\nJohn Rose my Sonne Thomas Orchard James Ousley and William Phillips
\nor the major part of them doe receive all the rents and proffitts of my
\nLand at Colliton and South Ley And of my Farme and landes of Morganhayes
\nnowe in the tenure and possesion of Richard Roberts untill Such time as my
\nsaid Sonne John Rose is to make a joynture of the said Farme unto Such a
\nwife as hee shall marry And shall have the same (after hee hath paied
\nor secured the Thousand pound before menconed for my daughter Maries porcon
\nfor his maintenance And they the said John Rose Tho: Orchard James
\nOusley and William Phillipps or the major parte of them shall likewise receive
\nthe rents and proffitts of all my other Landes in Colliton in the possession of
\nother my tenants there for and towards the full payment of my debtes
\noweinge before my death untill Such debtes shalbe fully Satisfied and discharged
\nAnd if anie proffitts shalbe over and above after my said Children shall have
\ntheir maintenance out of the Mannour and Demeasnes of Wotten Fitzpaine
\nand out of my landes leases and howses in Lyme and Charmouth aforesaid
\nThat such overplus of rents shalbe imployed to the payment of my debts by
\nthose formerly intrusted or the major parte of them who are to give account
\nfrom tyme to tyme of their receipts and payments to my overseers or the
\nmajor parte of them Item I give unto Anne Weston my Aunt [6] five pound
\nas a smale expression of my love and respectts to her for her care and paines
\nin my family desireinge her to continue the like care as formerly of my
\nChildren and orderinge of my Family after my death Item I give to my
\nsaid Sonne John Rose and the heires males of his body lawfully begotten
\nAll that the Farme and Mannour of Morganshayes in the parrishes of
\nSouth Leigh and Colliton in the County of Devon And I likewise give unto
\nhim those Farmes called Boorne heynes Playne Whittley Happer Hayne and
\nFrekehayne in the parish of Colliton in the aforesaid County withall
\nhowses Landes and Appurtenances thereto belonginge to him and to the heires
\nmales of his body lawfully begotten with power to make a Joynture to any
\nwife as hee shall marry on anie of the said Landes nor exceedinge two
\nhundred poundes by the yeare And if the said John Rose shall have only
\none or more daughters each of them shall have one Thousand pounds
\nporcon with conveynient maintenance till they be married or have attained
\nthe age of one and twenty yeares out of the said Mannour Farme and
\nlandes before menconed and given to him And if anie of them dye before
\ntheir age of one and twenty yeares, Then the porcon assigned to her shall
\ncease and determine And for default of such issue male of the body of the
\nsaid John Rose, the said Landes shall remayne unto and come to Henrie
\nRose my Second Sonne and to the heires males of his body lawfullie
\nbegotten And for default of such issue unto William Rose my third Sonne
\nand to the heires males of his body lawfully begotten And for default of
\nSuch issues, to my right heires forever. And whereas I have formerly settled on
\nmy Sonne Richard Rose and the heires amles of his body lawfully begotten
\nthe Manner rents and landes of Wotten Fitzpaine in the County of Dorsett
\nas by a Deed indented under my hand and Seale Dated the first day of May
\nIn the yeare of our Lord one Thousand six hundred Fifty and five and Livery
\nand Seison thereof then given playnely appeareth I doe likewise confirme the
\nsame by this my will The debtes and legacies formerly therin charged beinge
\npaid and discharged accordinge to this my will Item I doe intreate impower &
\nauthorize my Sonne John Rose Thomas Orchard James Owsley and William
\nPhillipps or the major part of them to sell soe much of my corne in howss
\nmowes or to be sowen this seison reserveinge only soe much as is necessary for
\n[p.7]
\nFamily uses And all my Cattell and horses reserveinge some Cowes and horses
\nfor the necessarie use of the howse And the money thereof made to be
\nsecured and Imployed towards the payment of my debtes And alsoe that
\nthey or the greater part of them may lett and Sett anie parte of my
\nFarme groundes or lands now in possession (or which hereafter shalbe in
\nthe possession of mee or of my assignes for the terme of three yeares, to
\nbegin from the five and twentieth day of March or the nine and twentieth
\nof September next after my death: the Rents to be paid quarterly for the
\nmaintenance of my Children and family as is before expressed And alsoe
\nmay sett and lett all my howses and landes in Charmouth and Lyme Regis
\nat a yearely rent not exceedinge Seaven yeares (except the howse wherein
\nMr Short now liveth the money and benefitt whereof with the rent Mr
\nShort payeth for the said howse shalbe imployed as the rent of the landes
\nin Wotten aforesaid, To them I give Twenty shillings a peece And for their
\nCharges travell and expence it shalbe deducted out of the rents and proffitts soe
\nmade upon Accompts which are to be taken by my overseers here afternamed
\nto whose love and care I referr my Funeralle Desireinge it may be decent
\nwithout great Cost or expence Item I much desire my beloved friends
\nThomas Moore and Henry Henley esquires my brother John Brodrepp and
\nJohn Hardy of Symondsbury Clerke to be my Overseers of this my will
\nTo each of them I give Forty shillings to buy a Ringe for everie of them
\nAnd if anie difference shall arise or gorwe betweene any of my Children

This will <\/span>was proved at London <\/span>the Nynteenth day of the

\nFifty and Seaven Before the Judges for probat of wills and granting
\nadministracons lawfully authorized by the oath of Richard Rose the
\nnaturall and lawfull Sonne of the said deceased and Sole executor
\nnamed in the said will To whom was committed Administracon of
\nall and Singular the goods Chattles and debtes of the said deceased

[1] Was Thomas the husband of a sister (or of a wife’s sister)? or the brother of an unknown wife? I think he was probably the brother of a sister, possibly Judith, who had been widowed many years before. John Harvey may be a relation of Richard’s brother-in-law Francis, husband of his sister Joane.<\/p>\n

[2] Discovery has 5 entries for cases in the Chancery Court where Richard Rose was the (or a) plaintiff and John Barcroft the defendant, dated between 1642 and 1653, all concerning property in or the manor of Broadmayne. I have yet to see any of these documents.<\/p>\n

[3] lots of Orsleys etc. in Winsham – did a sister or other relation of Richard’s first wife marry one?<\/p>\n

[4] Probably either Richard’s father-in-law by his first marriage (to whom the link leads) or to Richard’s brother-in-law<\/a> by that same marriage.<\/p>\n

[5] It is interesting to see that Richard now has Morganhayes. This was the home of the Morgans before they moved to Mapperton, and presumably was inherited by Mary Morgan, Richard’s mother-in-law. I wonder if it formed part of the marriage settlement when Richard married Mary’s daughter?<\/p>\n

[6] Aunt or Aunt-in-law? I haven’t worked out where Aunt Anne fits in the tree. With his father from Jersey and born too early for most surviving Jersey records (neither PRs nor wills survive early enough) I don’t know if a sister of John Roze may have come to England. Richard’s mother had a sister Anne, but she was married by 1589 so unlikely to have been living in 1657. (I have yet to do any research to try to find out more about Aunt Anne, though I plan to)<\/em><\/p>\n

[7] Identity of ‘Bradrepp’ witnesses uncertain; J may well have been Richard’s brother-in-law John. I don’t know of a nephew Thomas, but (at the time of writing) I only know of those sons of John that were living when he wrote his will in 1685.<\/p>\n

[8] Richard’s mother-in-law Mary née Morgan had Luttrell half-siblings, I guess that Mary may be a wife or daughter of one of these.<\/p>\n
