William<\/a> is a 1st cousin 9 x removed of mine, being a first cousin of my direct ancestor Æneas Symons<\/a>. William was a ‘glover’, which conjures up in my mind the image of a poor person sitting in a humble cottage stitching away at gloves; however I think this will makes it clear that this is not<\/em> what William was doing. Rather, I imagine he was running a glove making business. The occupations he mentions of those from whom he had loans (highlighted in green) makes it clear he was in contact with those who dealt with the production and selling of leather, the leather from which presumably gloves would be amonst the items made. The only loans from people not involved with leather or gloves were Exeter folk. The places in which the loan-suppliers lived (highlighted in yellow) cover a surprisingly wide area.<\/p>\n

Quite a contrast from his cousin Æneas, who seems to have been a humble wig maker \/ barber in Kingsbridge. Although their grandfather Bevill Bastard was a younger son of a moderately wealthy family, William, as the oldest son of Sampson, who appears to have been Bevill’s only (or only surviving) son, would probably have inherited most.<\/p>\n

\nI William Bastard<\/i> of the City of Exon Glover being in perfect
\nHealth of Body and of sound and disposing Mind Memory
\nand Understanding ^ {thanks be to Almighty God for the same Do make publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following} (that is to say) First I recommend my
\nSoul to Almighty God that gave it and my Body I commit
\nto the Earth to be decently interred at the discretionof my
\nExecutrix hereinafter named also I do hereby charge all my
\nlands Goods Chattels Real and personal Estate whatsover
\nand wheresoever which I shall die possessed of or be
\nentitled unto at the time of my death with the payment
\nof a certain Bond which I gave to Trustees previous to
\nmy Intermarriage with my Dear Wife Margaret Bastard<\/a>
\nfor seven hundred pounds as in and by the said Bond
\nrelation being thereunto had will appear and after payment
\nof the said Bond of seven hundred pounds and all my just
\ndebts contracted since the Month of August in the year
\nof our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty
\none And whereas I was at that time obliged to make a
\nComposition with the several persons ^ {herein after mentioned} and there now
\nremains due to them the several Sums also hereinafter
\nmentioned (to wit) to John Holloway of Yeovil<\/span> in the
\nCounty of Somerset Glover<\/span> for himself and Mary King
\nof the same place Widow his Mother in Law deceased
\nthe Sum of twenty five pounds and ten Shillings, to John
\nMayo of the City of Bristol<\/span> Skinner<\/span> the Sum of eight pounds
\nsixteen Shillings to William Pocock of the City of London<\/span>
\nLeather seller<\/span> the Sum of fifty three pounds to Samuel
\nStephens of Saint Thomas the Apostle<\/span> in the County of
\nDevon Leather Dresser<\/span> the Sum of eighteen pounds eighteen
\nshillings to Mary Stooke Widow and Executrix of Clement
\nHooke late of the City of Exon<\/span> aforesaid Grocer<\/span> deceased the
\nSum of forty five pounds to Francis Bidwell of the said
\nCity of Exon<\/span> Merchant<\/span> the Sum of fifty pounds to the
\nExecutor or administrator of William Allenbridge late of
\nDonyatt<\/span> in the County of Somerset Glover<\/span> deceased the
\nSum of seventeen pounds twelve Shillings to Thomas
\nBinford of the said City of Exon<\/span> Merchant<\/span> the Sum of eighty
\none pounds to Andrew Danbuey of the City of Bristol<\/span>
\naforesaid Skinner<\/span> the Sum of thirty three pounds twelve
\nShillings to Walter Hill of the City of Worcester<\/span> Glover<\/span>
\nthe Sum of thirteen pounds to Jonas Dennis of the said
\nCity of Exon<\/span> Salter<\/span> the Sum of one hundred and two
\npounds to the Executor or administrator of Ann Rich
\n[p.2]
\nlate of the City of Exon<\/span> aforesaid Widow deceased the
\nSum of nine pounds All which said Sums put together
\nmake the Sum of four hundred and fifty seven pounds
\neight Shillings which said Sum of four hundred and fifty
\nseven pounds and eight Shillings in order to make the
\nsaid Creditors Satisfaction I hereby charge the
\nRemainder of my said Lands Goods Chattels Real and
\npersonal Estate whatsover and wheresoever after
\npayment of the aforesaid Bond for seven hundred
\npounds unto my said Wife Margaret Bastard and the
\nsaid debts contracted by me since the said Month of
\nAugust in the said year of our Lord one thousand
\nseven hundred and sixty one as aforesaid with the
\npayment of and for the more effectual and speedy
\npayment of the several debts to the several persons afore
\nmentioned I do hereby after payment and discharge
\nof the before mentiond Bond of seven hundred pounds
\ngiven In Trust for my said Wife as aforesaid and the
\nsaid debts contracted by me since the said Month of
\nAugust in the said year of our Lord one thousand seven
\nhundred and sixty one as aforesaid give and bequeath
\nunto the aforesaid Samuel Stephens and Thomas
\nFurlong the younger of the City of Exon aforesaid Gentleman
\nand the Survivor of them the aforesaid Sum of four hundred
\nand fifty seven pounds eight Shillings to be paid unto them
\nor the Survivor of them within six Months after my decease
\n(the Bond of seven hundred pounds In Trust for my said
\nwife the said Debts contracted by me since the said
\nMonth of August in the said Year of our Lord one
\nthousand seven hundred and sixty one as aforesaid
\nmy Funeral Charges and the Expences attending
\nproving this my Will being first paid and discharged
\nIn Trust for the payment of the several Sums respectively
\ndue to the several persons abovementioned and my Will
\nis and I do hereby order and direct my said Trustees and
\nthe Survivor of them that after they have received or the
\nSurvivor of them hath received the said Sum of four
\nhundred and fifty seven pounds eight Shillings that
\nthey or the Survivor ^ {of them} do apply the same towards the
\npayment of the said severall Sums to the said several
\npersons before mentioned as soon as conveniently
\nmay be after receiving the same and my Will further is
\nthat if my said Trustees and the Survivor of them shall
\nnot receive the full Sum of four hundred and fifty seven
\npounds eight Shillings that then the aforesaid John
\nHolloway for himself and Mary King John Mayo William
\nPocock Samuel Stephens Mary Stooke Francis Bidwell the
\nExecutor or Administrator of William Allenbridge Thomas
\nBinford Andrew Danbuey Walter Hill Jonas Dennis and
\nthe Executor or Administrator of Ann Rich and every and
\neach of them shall be paid by my said Trustees and the
\nSurvivor of them in proportion to the respective debt or
\n[p.3]
\ndebts due to them respectively and I do hereby further
\norder and direct my said Trustees and the Survivor of
\nthem that they or the Survivor of them do as soon as
\nconveniently may be after my decease sell and dispose
\nof all my Lands Goods Chattels Real and personal
\nEstate whatsover and wheresoever that I shall be possessed
\nof or intitled unto at the time of my death (immediately
\nafter that shall happen) for the best price or prices that can
\nbe got for the same and with the Moneys arising by such
\nSales first to pay off and discharge the said Bond of
\nseven hundred pounds given In Trust to my said Wife as
\naforesaid then to pay off and discharge all such Debts as I
\nshall have contracted since the said Month of August
\nin the said year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
\nand sixty one my Funeral Charges and the Charges of
\nproving this ^ {my} Will as aforesaid and with the Remander
\nto pay off and discharge the said several Sums to the
\nsaid several persons before mentioned as aforesaid or such
\nproportions of such said several Sums as they my said
\nTrustees shall receive and if any Moneys shall then
\nremain in the Hands of my said Trustees I do hereby
\norder and direct that the same shall be put out at
\nInterest by my said Trustees on the best Security that
\ncan be got for the same and the Interest arising thereby to be
\npaid and applied for and towards the sole use and Benefit of
\nmy said Wife Margaret Bastard for and during her natural
\nLife and from and after her decease I do hereby give such
\nRemainder to be equally divided between my two Brothers
\nSampson Bastard<\/a> and James Bastard<\/a> their Heirs Executors
\nAdministrators and Assigns And my Will further is and I do
\nhereby order and direct that my said Trustees and the
\nSurvivor of them shall reimburse to himself and themselves
\nall such reasonable Costs and Expences as they or either of
\nthem shall be at or put unto for or by means of the
\nExecutor of the Trust hereby in them reposed and that
\nmy said Trustees shall not be answerable or accountable
\nthe one for the act of the other of them but each of them
\nfor his own act only And Lastly all the Rest Residue and
\nRemainder of my said Lands Goods Chattels Credits Real and
\npersonal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever that I shall be
\npossessed of or intitled unto at the time of my death I do
\nhereby give devise and bequeath the same to my said
\nWife Margaret Bastard and do make and ordaine her
\nto be the whole and sole Executrix and Residuary Legatee
\nof this my last Will and Testament In Witness<\/i> whereof I have

\nsheet of paper to the bottom of the first side set and
\nsubscribed my Name and and on the other side my Name and
\nSeal this fourth Day of November in the year of our Lord

\nWidow the Relict of the Deceased and sole Executrix named
\nin the said Will to whom Administration of the Goods Chatt[el]s
