Joane Grigsby<\/a> is a 10 x great grandmother of mine.<\/p>\n

In the name of God Amen<\/strong>
\nAnno Dom: 1635 I Joane Grigby of the
\nP[ar]ish of Marden in the county of Kent, widdow
\nsicke in body but of good and perfect remem=
\n=brance thanks be given to God therefore
\ndoe make and ordayne this my last will
\nand testament (renounceing all other wills
\nand testaments whatsoever) in manner
\nand forme following First I bequeath
\nmy soule into the hands of Almighty God
\nmy saviour and redeemer trustinge in his
\nmercy to bee an Inheritour of the Kingdome
\nof glory and my body to bee buryed in the
\nchurchyard of Marden Item I give unto
\nmy sonne William Grigsbey<\/a> 12d: to be
\npaid unto him by my executrix Joane<\/a>
\n Grigsby<\/a> within a month after my decease
\nItem I give unto my sonne Edward<\/a>
\n Grigsby<\/a> all those moneys which shall re=
\nmayne in his hands after my decease
\nonely out of the said moneyes my sonne
\nEdward shall disburse towards my buryall
\ntwenty shillinges Item I give unto Joane
\nGrigsbey my daughter that sixteene
\npounds of English money lent unto
\nWilliam Jowell by bond and also all
\nmy goods and houshold stuffe whatsoever
\nagain<\/del> whom also I doe make and ordayne to bee
\nmy whole and sole executrix of this my
\nlast will and testament and I intreate
\nmy loveinge Minister Mr. John Wood
\nto bee my overseer of this my last will
\nand testament and give him for his
\npaynes therein two shillinges In wittnes
\nwhereof I have set to my hand and
\nseale the 22th<\/sup> day of June and in p'[re]sence
\nof John Hernden his marke Edward
\nBenskin his marke Joane Grigsby

Probate statement shows the will was proved 1 October 1635<\/div>\n

It’s important not to read too much into wills like this. Both of Joane’s sons were married by the time she wrote her will while her daughter was not. Her sons had therefore probably received their shares at the time of their marriages.<\/p>\n

The will was proved in the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury and is viewable on microfilm at the CCA<\/a> or KHLC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is a transcript of the register copy, CCA<\/a> ref: PRC17\/69\/127a<\/strong> (more details about source will be on Joane’s page). The original will also survives (CCA<\/a> ref: PRC16\/209 G\/4); I have checked the register copy against this, and they are word for word the same, with just a few spelling differences .<\/p>\n
