Name William BAILEY Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1802 Kingsteignton, Devon, England Baptised 2 Jan 1803 St. Michael’s Church, Kingsteignton, Devon, England Gender Male Residence From 1807 Teigngrace, Devon, England - In 1807 William with his parents and four siblings was removed from Kingsteignton to Teigngrace when the family needed support under the Poor Laws.
I don't know how long they / he remained there; next I know of him he was getting married in Walkhampton, quite some distance from Teigngrace of Kingsteignton. I guess William would have served an apprenticeship to work as a thatcher; this would probably been from about 1816-1823.
Maybe William was an apprentice on the western side of Dartmoor, and this led to his marriage in Walkhampton. Finding out what parish he was 'of' when he married will be interesting and should give a clue as to where he was working at that time, although this would be after completing any apprenticeship (apprentices were not permitted to marry).
Residence 1826 Whitchurch, Devon, England - William was probably living in or near Whitchurch Parish when he got married in 1825, and remained there when his first two daughters were born and baptised, before moving back to Kingsteignton.
Residence 1832 Old Sandygate, Kingsteignton, Devon, England - Back in Kingsteignton parish by the time his son Joseph was baptised in 1830, the family are known to have been living at Old Sandygate when son William was baptised in 1832.

In 1851 with children Betsey, Samuel, Jane, John, Mary Ann and Jemima.
Occupation 1841 Kingsteignton, Devon, England Thatcher - (acc to the 1841 Census)
Occupation 1849 Kingsteignton, Devon, England Labourer - Shown as a labourer on his dau Jemima's birth cert and on his death certificate (on the latter it may be a general term to include both / all his occupations)
Occupation 1851 Kingsteignton, Devon, England Clay cutter - William worked for part of his life as a clay cutter - more about this industry in Kingsteignton can be read here.
Residence From 1861 to 1871 Pennycomequick, Whitchurch, Devon, England - The reason why William and his family moved from Whitchurch to Kingsteignton c. 1829 is not clear. His elderly father was living with William and his family in 1841, but given that he had other siblings in Kingsteignton it is hard to imagine that it was a need to care for elderly parents that caused them to move.
Whatever the reason, William clearly worked from some years in that area as a thatcher - at least to 1841. But slate was probably replacing thatch as the roof material of choice at this time, and that may well be why by 1849 he was a labourer, and in 1851 a clay cutter. I suspect a preference for thatching and the opportunity to work once again as a thatcher may be what led to a return to Whitchurch sometime between 1851 and 1861, probably by 1856 when his son John Henry died in Whitchurch Parish.
That he lived in Pennycomequick from the census returns.
Pennycomequick appears to be on the OS map at SX515740
Besides Emanuel Vogwill who was working with William, only Samuel and Jemimah remained living at home at the time of the 1861 census.
Occupation From 1861 to 1871 Whitchurch, Devon, England Thatcher - (acc to the 1861 and 1871 Censuses)
In 1861 a 15 year old Emanuel Vogwell (born Callington, Cornwall) was a "Thatcher servant". Although not shown as a relation, he seems to be the 1st cousin once removed of Elizabeth, William's wife, and the great nephew of William, too, if I am right that his sister was the Jane who married the Henry Vogwill b c 1794.
The opening of new mines in West Devon led to mine buildings as well as accomodation for the miners being erected as the need arose. Sometimes at least these buildings were thatched; these new buildings may have created more opportunities for work in this part of Devon when William returned there, although by the 1860s mining in the area was declining.
Died 29 Oct 1874 Nutley Chapel, Whitchurch, Devon, England Cause: Diseased heart (12 months) and dropsy - Death registered by Jane Lavis, of Whitchurch Village, who was present at the death.
The "where died" is interesting - did William die at an event in the Chapel, or was this used to describe an area including homes as well as the Chapel, or was he just travelling past it? 29 Oct 1874 was a Thursday so he wasn't at a Sunday service, but may have been at a meeting there. Nutley is about a mile from Pennycomequick where William may well have been living (where the family were in 1861 and 1871)
The informant is also of interest. Jane LAVIS, born Joan COAD was a mason's daughter from Milton Abbot. She married John Lavis, recorded variously as a labourer, ag lab and tin miner. They then appear to have lived on the Old Plymouth Road in Whitchurch parish for many years. I have not spotted , any close relationship between Jane or her husband and family and William or his family.
Were the two families friends? Perhaps William had been mining with John Lavis and the become friendly. Or was Jane employed as a nurse in William's final illness? William's wife was still living, but we don't know the state of her health. Since daughter Jemima was living with William and Elizabeth in 1871, and still with her mother in 1881 it might have been expected she could help with any caring for her Dad that might have been needed.
If William did die at a chapel service or meeting then Jane must have been present too; perhaps that is how she came to register the death.

Whilst most Bailey Teigngrace entries are this family, the Joseph who with his wife Elizabeth had a family there in the C19th was not the son of this Joseph, but of Joseph's brother William.

Abt 1805, Whitchurch, Devon, England , d. 4 Jan 1880, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 75 years) Married 1 Apr 1825 Walkhampton Church, Walkhampton, Devon, England - From the DFHS index of PR entries: shows William Bealey mar Elizabeth Vogwill (I haven't yet seen actual entry)
Whitchurch is about 28 miles from Kingsteignton, and only about half a miles less from Teigngrace. So how did William from the Kingsteignton / Teigngrace area meet Elizabeth from the Whitchurch area?
William's older sister Jane had got married in 1816 to one Henry Vogwell; Henry was the uncle of William's bride so I guess it was through his sister Jane that William met Elizabeth.
But of course this then creates the question: how had Jane from the Kingsteignton / Teigngrace area met Henry from the Whitchurch area?
