Name Charles Baker HAMBLING Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Sep Q 1844 Totnes, Devon, England - GRO ref: HAMBLING, Charles Baker q3 1844 Totnes RD 9 504
Gender Male Education 1851 Scholar Occupation 1861 Totnes, Devon, England Gunsmith - Aged 16 at the time of the 1861 census Charles was living at home and working, like his father, who was presumably teaching him the skill, as a gunsmith. With his father dying the following year, 3 years after he went bankrupt, Charles was probably not in a position to work in business by himself. Learning from the family, he would not have been formally apprenticed and needed to complete an apprenticeship, though he may have moved to Blackawton to his grandparents, where his Hambling grandfather or Uncle Henry could have kept on eye on him and continued teaching him, possibly teaching him engraving skills as well, or to Kingsbridge to his uncle Hiram.
Although living back in Totnes when he died in 1867 he had lived in Birmingham for some time between these dates, probably attracted there to find work as mechanisation was taking over in gunmaking as in much else. It will be interesting to see his marriage certificate and to see what his residence was given as at the time of his marriage.
His uncle Reuben, who never seemed to stay anywhere for long, may have moved from Birmingham to Manchester in about 1865; possibly Reuben had encouraged his nephew to move to Birmingham and / or helped him find employment.
Charles died of consumption - possibly it was his ill health, and the hope that clean Devon air would be good for him - that led to the move back to his home town, or possibly because his and his wife's relations were there and could help look after them.
Residence 1867 21, Exeter Street, Holloway Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England - Charles wrote his will when living in Birmingham in June 1867. By the time of his death less than 3 months later he had returned to the town of his birth, Totnes. He lived longer than most of his siblings; I suspect most of them died of TB.
Occupation 1867 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Gunsmith and Engraver - By the time Charles wrote his will he was living in Birmingham, and described himself as an engraver as well as a gunsmith.
Will 18 Jun 1867 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Written Died 1 Sep 1867 Totnes, Devon, England - GRO ref: Hamlyn, Charles Baker, aged 25, q3 1867 Totnes RD 5b 113
