    • The Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices' Indentures shows that on 1st September 1767 tax was paid for John Issell, apprenticed to John Horswell, cordwainer of Blackawton. The register gives no indication of the date the apprenticeship started, not of John Issell's father's name, but this is the only John I've come across who would have been the right age at that time - and he certainly became a cordwainer. (In 'normal' (as opposed to pauper) apprenticeships children were usually apprenticed for seven years from the age of 14).
    Tax records 1829
    Death duty
    Will 1829
    The will of John Issell (c 1753 - 1829)
    The will of John Issell (c 1753 - 1829)
John left quite a simple will, leaving everything to his wife, so long as she didn't remarry, and then after her death everything to be divided equally between his children - his daughter Susan being treated the same as his sons.
Probably the most interesting aspect is the mention of herberys and orchards along with the usual list of property, money etc..
    Occupation Cordwainer
