Do I have the right William Pitts?
This one was born in about 1790 judging from census returns and age at death (in 1872), but another was buried in Blackawton aged 44 in 1834!
Gender Male Occupation From 1813 to 1829 Wadstray, Blackawton, Devon, England Butcher - Shown as butcher in all the entries for his children's baptisms, 1813 - 1829 (no father's occupation shown for the earlier ones so probably a butcher then too)
Shown as of Wadstray for children's baptisms from 1825 - 1829, no abode shown for earlier ones so could well have been at Wadstray then too.
Occupation 1841 Lower Wadstray, Blackawton, Devon, England Farmer - By 1841 it appears his son (or sons) had taken over the butchering while William worked as a farmer.
There were 2 farms known as Lower Wadstray, so to avoid confusion one was renamed Middle Wadstray. In the 1841 census both are just shown as "Lower Wadstray" so I am not clear which of the 2 the Pitts were at.
(I read about the 2 names in a booklet I read while staying at Middle Wadstray Farm in 2012; stupidly I didn't make a note of the name of the booklet!)
It should be possible to work it out from the tithe commutation map.
Middle Wadstray Farm
Farm buildings and farmhouse; the latter looks like it has evolved from an old longhouse.Died 22 Jan 1872 (probably), Blackawton, Devon, England - GRO ref.: PITTS, William q1 1872 aged 82 Kingsbridge RD 5b 151
Actual date from gravestone
(There is also a burial of a Wm Pitts in Blackawton on 13 Jul 1834 aged 44 - can't be this one because I've found him in census returns up to 1871!)
Buried 28 Jan 1872 St. Michael’s Church, Blackawton, Devon, England - source: South Hams website
Age given as 82
Siblings 2 brothers and 3 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch William PITTS, d. Yes, date unknown (Father)
Elizabeth LINNINGTON, b. Abt 1758, d. 1831 (Age ~ 73 years) (Mother)Notes - Retired by 1851, census entry adjacent to the Vicarage entry so presumably now living in the village nr the Vicarage.
Nicholas burial (aged 1 month) in 1826 shows his abode as "Dartmouth" - was he living with a grandparent or other, or did the family move to Dartmouth and then back to Wadstray? (Caroline was shown as resident at Wadstray when she died in 1830)
