Name John TRANT Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 21 Jun 1778 St. Martin’s Church, Sherford, Devon, England Gender Male Occupation From 1814 to 1841 Frogmore, Devon, England Carpenter - Shown as joiner when his daughter was baptised, and as carpenter in the 1841 census.
Although John was only shown as a carpenter, there was no address of "public house" shown on the census for the part of Frogmore in Sherford parish 1841, though there was for the South Pool parish part. The Inn that John Gard was at in 1841 he was still Inn Keeper of in 1851 (as well as being a farmer) so John Trant had not taken over from him. I suspect John Trant was also a victualler in this year, as he and his family were later, and probably earlier. By 1851 he may have retired from doing work other than being an Inn Keeper (he was by then in his 70s)
Occupation 1851 Public House, Frogmore, Devon, England Victualler - I'm pretty sure this is the same John who was at the Sherford Inn in the 1820s (there are documents in the Devon Record Office for each yr 1822-1828 relating to him being there). Since part of Frogmore is in Sherford Parish it is probably the same Inn. His daughter Caroline appears to have taken over after his death, and it would appear that the Globe Inn was where they were inn keepers.
Died 13 May 1854 Frogmore, Devon, England - Alive at the time of the 1851 census, but his wife a widow by 1861.

Philip Trant may have been the son of John and Elizabeth but I think he was more likely the son of John's brother William. See birth notes on Philip's page for my thoughts on this.

Wills (transcripts) The will of John's mother, Elizabeth Trant (nee Foal)
Elizabeth left John "All that my undivided Moiety (leasehold) of the lower Tenement called Pound House" in Frogmore.
In addition, he was left half of her "Lime Kiln with the fields and appurtenances thereunto belonging" - half because this was to be shared equally with his brother William.
