    • Orphaned in 1865, it may have been then that she moved to live with her childless great uncle and aunt, Thomas Efford Issell (b c 1798) and his wife Elizabeth; with whom she was living at the time of the 1871 census.
In 1861, though, her maternal grandmother (Elizabeth Hillman) was living with her and her father, and Elizabeth Hillman didn't die until 1876, at the age of 87, so it may be that she continued to look after Emma for a while. Elizabeth, though, may have acquired physical or mental infirmities which meant she  herself needed caring for; not found so far in the 1871 census.

In 1874 Emma's great uncle died and in  1881 she was with the widowed Elizabeth. In 1884, the same year that her great aunt died,  Emma married. Her great uncle had specified in his will that the property they lived in in Slapton, "Holditches", was to go to Emma after his wife's death, so in 1891 and 1901 she was still there, now with her husband and 3 children. Whilst most of the neighbouring dwellings are shown as having only 3 or 4 rooms, this column is not filled in for Emma's house, indicating it had at least 5.

In all years an adjacent census entry was for the the Lamberts (or, in 1901, widower John Lambert alone). The wife, Jane, had first been married to Robert Issell, a first cousin of Emma's father.
Bequest 1884  “Holditches”, Slapton, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
House, garden, orchard, field and workshop etc. called “Holditches”
    • When her great uncle Thomas Efford Issell wrote his will in 1870 he left a bequest to Emma, but only after his (TEI's) wife's death. This didn't occur until 1884.
"I give and devise all my freehold dwelling house garden orchard field and workshop together with the appurtenances thereto belonging called "Holditches" situate at Slapton aforesaid and now in the occupation of myself and tenants And also the tithe rent charge issuing out of or payable in respect of this same unto Emma Hillman Issell Daughter of my deceased Nephew Thomas Issell late of Dartmouth aforesaid to and for her own absolute use and benefit".

Thomas also directed that Emma should receive the residue of the estate if his wife didn't make provision for it's disposal at her death. Since there was a grant of administration following the deat of Thomas's wife it looks like she didn't leave a will and so Emma would have received any residue of Thomas's estate.
