Baptised 21 May 1845 St. James’ Church, Slapton, Devon, England Gender Male Occupation 1861 Stokenham, Devon, England Apprentice cordwainer - Apprenticed to his uncle, also called Thomas Issell (b 1824).
Residence 1871 Hanover Square, Dartmouth, Devon, England - Lodger and boarder with aunt (in-law) Catherine Issell and cousin, in Hanover Square Dartmouth (1871); Catherine was the widow of his uncle John Pike Issell, also a shoemaker who had moved from Stokenham to Dartmouth.
Occupation From 1871 to 1921 Lower Street, Dartmouth, Devon, England Cordwainer - Lodging with his aunt in Hanover Square in 1871 - not clear where he was working; but I suspect it was for his father's cousin, John Pike, who was a cordwainer in Lower Street.
All subsequent census entries shows Thomas in Lower St. and 1911 census shows this is where he worked and also shows him as an employer. I suspect he took over the business after John Pike died in 1877.
1890: under boot and shoe makers in White's directory
Residence From 1881 to 1921 Lower Street, Dartmouth, Devon, England - Living in Lower St, Dartmouth (1881, 1890, 1901 & 1911 - in latter shown as 4 rooms). These 4 rooms must have included the cordwainer's business as Thomas is shown as working at home.
1911: a widower, living with his dau Catherine and an unmarried sister-in-law Lucy James (Lucy, like Eliza, was born in Coleford).
Lucy again present in 1921, although shown as a visitor. Thomas's daughter Catharine was also still present, and there was another visitor, 54 year old Alice Jenkins, like Thomas' late wife and sister-in-law born in Coleford. Address shown as 3 Lower Street in 1921.
Bequest 1884 A third of £50 - When his uncle Thomas Efford Issell wrote his will in 1870 he left £50 to be shared between Thomas, his brother Robert and cousin Thomas Efford Issell, but only after his (TEI's) wife's death. This didn't occur until 1884.
"I give and bequeath unto Thomas Issell and Albert Issell Sons of Robert Issell late of Slapton aforesaid deceased and to Thomas Efford Issell Son of John Issell late of Dartmouth deceased the sum of Fifty pounds to be equally divided between them"
