    • My notes from viewing the PRs on microfiche and the South Hams website agree that the PRs shown John as the son of John and Elizabeth.
I believe this is a mistake.
(image of PR entry now on FMP, viewed 24 Nov 2014, and that confirms mother's name was recorded as Elizabeth)
The age given for John at death suggest he was baptised as was the norm as a young baby  (less than 6 months old). His baptism was just over a year after John and Susanna married. He cannot therefore have been a son of John by a previous wife.
If he was a son of the John I show, he was the son of John and Susanna.
John of John and Susanna left a will; in this he names his 5 children. The other 4 are named in age order, from oldest to youngest, and it therefore seems reasonable to suppose that his son John being listed first was the oldest. No baptism for John son of "John and Susanna" has been found so this too is consistent with a mistake in the PR, Elizabeth having been written instead of Susanna.
    Gender Male
Apprentice 1828  Stokenham, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Pauper apprentice
    • In 1828 fourteen year old James Sheppard was placed with a John Issell, cordwainer by the overseers of the poor of Stokenham parish. (from catalogue entry, DHC ref. 3031A/PO 7/11/22)
Given the age of the father of this John, I think it was this John rather than his father that the apprentice was placed with.
    Bequest 1842
    £5
    • Bequest from his aunt Susanna Efford (nee Issell)
The will of Susanna Efford nee Issell (c.1758-1842)
The will of John's aunt, Susanna Efford
John, like 2 of his 3 brothers, was left £5 (the other brother, named after his aunt's husband, was left £10 and a silver watch)
Residence 1861  The Post Office, Issells’ Corner, Stokenham, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • c. 1980 we visited the then Post Office in Stokenham and were told that the Post Office had moved - the Issells lived at "Issells' Corner". I believe it was this corner, and a photo in a Kellond Family Newsletter confirms that other's understand this to be the case too.

See the cottage on Google street view

1861: next entry is a Farm House, which suggests they were on an edge of the village, 1841 next entry is Widdicombe, suggesting similarly.
1851 next entry was the Vicarage - where was / is this? On the other side the entries are mostly out of the main village, again consistent with an edge location.
Occupation Stokenham, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Cordwainer (master), sub-post master
    • John is shown as a cordwainer (a boot and shoe maker) in the 1841 - 1861 censuses; by 1871 John had retired.
He had 2 apprentices living in in 1841: "15" yr old (may have been rounded down) John Stone, and 11 (or 14) year old John Lambert.
In 1851 he had 3 apprentices living in: 18 yr old Samuel Torr (born Stokenham), 17 year old Thomas Knowls (born Slapton), 12 year old John Chizel (also born Slapton).

In 1861 he was also shown as sub-postmaster, and his home was shown as the Post Office. No mention of PO in 1841 or 1851.
Died 29 May 1865  Stokenham, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
