Name Susanna ISSELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1758 Stokenham, Devon, England Baptised 8 Feb 1758 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England Gender Female Bequest 15 Aug 1835 From her husband's will - Susanna appears to have been the main beneficiary of her husband's will.
Executor / Trustee 15 Aug 1835 Sole executrix of her husband's will Will 28 Jul 1836 Written The will of Susanna Efford nee Issell (c.1758-1842)
Susanna is a 6 x gt aunt, the sister of my 5 x gt grandfather John Issell (b c 1753).
Because she seems to have had no children, at least none who surivived her, most of her bequests were to relations of Susanna and her late husband, so her will is useful in confirming / providing evidence of relationships.Residence 6 Jun 1841 Redcrop Street, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England - At the time of the 1841 census Susanna was living in the home of journeyman engineer William Bond and his daughter Ester, a governess.
Also present (and I guess working in the house, not just boarders working elsewhere) were 2 female servants.
Susanna was shown as of independant means.
Died Jun Q 1842 Clifton Reg Dist, Gloucestershire, England - Susanna's will was written on 28 July 1836 and proved on 20 July 1842, so she must have died between these two dates.
This death in Clifton RD is in the right area and the only one on FreeBMD to fit (of course deaths in 1836 and the first half of 1837 were not regstered, but it seems unlikely she would have died then as admin was not usually granted so long afterwards). In addition, there is a Susanna Efford to fit this Susanna in the 1841 census. She was living in the Civil Parish of St Philip and Jacob. The info. regarding parishes and registration districts seems unusally incomplete or with a typo regarding the Parish of St Philip and Jacob, in the info that FreeBMD links to. It shows 2 parishes, St Philip and Jacob In and St Philip and Jacob Out. The later was in Clifton RD, the former was in Bristol RD from 1877 - nowhere before then. But that if Susanna was at the same address the year after the census her death could have been in Clifton RD shows at least that there is no inconsistancy here to worry about.

(groom and both witnesses signed)Thomas and Susanna seem to have left no descendants (neither of their wills refer to any, although Susanna's names many nephews and nieces etc.); I can't be sure they didn't have any children who pre-deceased them, though I have not found the baptism of any children in the Stokenham to Dartmouth area, 1791-1811.
Various papers survive referring to a Thomas Efford born in Bristol in 1804, but he was still alive in 1849 when, having been discharged unfit from the army the previous year, he gained a seaman's ticket for the merchant navy. Consequently, I don't believe he was a son fo Thomas and Susanna.
(Papers referring to army service, particularly his discharge are at the TNA)
