    Notes
    • Gotheme in marr record, Gotham in burial (acc to IGI)

A Katherin, dau of Richard Gotam, was buried in Chartham 3 Jan 1558/9 - a dau of this Richard by a previous marriage or was this Richard's father also called Richard and Katherine the sister of this Richard?

In his will Richard mentions 4 sons, i.e. 4 who were still living in 1585, including a Richard not found in the KFHS PR transcription - he could have been a son by an earlier marriage, but since listed last was probably a younger son, accidentally omitted from the register. I believe one of the Johns to be the one who settled in Burmarsh, the other the one who moved to the Hoath area (probably via Eastry).

      Mystole and Salter's Platt

In his will Richard refer's to his house at Mystole. In the 1614 lease of Salter's Platt to a Richard Gotham - probably this Richard's grandson, possibly his son - it refers to the work done on the land by a "late Richard Gotham" who I am sure must be this Richard. It would appear that he increased the value of the land by erecting a barn "and ..." and so because of this the later Richard was getting preferential terms.
(As at 19 Aug 2011 I have not yet seen the earlier 1595 lease of the land to John Gotham so I don't know if that also mentions Richard. I may not get the opportunity to view / transcribe it before the summer of 2012)

      Goathams in Chartham

It seems likely that Richard and John who were having children around the same time in Chartham were brothers. Had the family been in Chartham or nearby for generations or were they newly arrived?
If the Goathams did come from the Continent at the time of the Reformation, then maybe it was Richard and John who came over - with their parents? Is the spelling Gotheme in the Chartham PRs (acc to the IGI) significant?
Richard married "Cycele Fred" - Fred / Fride seems to be a name with Germanic origins - maybe it wasn't Richard who was the immigrant - or maybe, as must often have happened, 2 children from immigrant families married.

The KFHS CD with a transcript of the Chartham PRs begins just too late to show whether Richard and John were Chartham born-and-bred : they begin in 1558.

In the meantime, that burial on 3 Jun 1558 seems significant, though, in suggesting that the Goathams did not come as Protestants taking refuge in England. Although the first Protestant refugees seem to have arrived in 1548, they fled back to the continent when Mary ascended the throne in 1553. She died 17 Nov 1558, after which
      more came.

So is the story of Belgium / Low Country origins untrue?

It could be, maybe someone met Belgian Gottems and decided that must be where we originated.
Or it could be true but inaccurate - as I have often found stories with much more recent origins. Maybe a Goatham told his children / grandchildren that their forebears had come to England in this way - but omitted to explain it was via his mother's, non-Goatham side.

      Weavers?

When I came across the family surname Praull it seemed the possible origin for such stories (though actually I'm not sure it is in the line of some who have heard the story). Then I saw there were Praulls leaving wills in Kent in the C15th century and dismissed the idea. But just after I started reading about some of the mid-Kent villages where the Praulls and other ancestors lived - and read about King Edward III bringing weaver craftsmen over from Flanders in the C14th. So there could be foreign origins a couple of centuries prior to the reformation.

The 1614 Lease of Salter's Platt to Richard Goatham
The 1614 Lease of Salter's Platt to Richard Goatham
A transcription of the indenture for this lease, of land and barn in the parish of Chartham, between a Richard Goatham and the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral.

I believe the "Richard Gotham of Chislett" who leased the land in 1614 was probably the grandson, possibly the son of this Richard Goatham.

What is particularly interesting from this Richard's point of view is that I think he must be the "Richard Gotham of Chartam deceased" who is mentioned in the lease as having erected a…
