Michael PIKE
Set As Default Person -
Name Michael PIKE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1692 South Hams, Devon, England
- just a guess at a date and place based on date of marriage
Gender Male Died Yes, date unknown Notes - There was a marriage of a Joan Pike in 1738 - possibly Michael's widow?
There was a Pike family at Beeson in the 1690s - Michael may have been part of this family, possibly the son of the Richard mentioned in the following record:
6 May 1690
John PIKE ye son of Richd. PIKE of Beeson was buryed after ye same manner of Andrew CRANCH'S daughter was.
This other burial referred to was:
22 April 1690
Elizabeth CRANCH was buryed ye daughter of Andrew CRANCH of Kingsbridge who
dyed att grandfathers house in Chillington and was rapidly put with ground and covered wh'out notice given to ye Vicar.
What was the reason? - suggestions are to avoid burial fees or due to a contagious illness.
Lists of epidemics don't show anything for the UK for 1690 but endemic diseases were always around.
There was no tax at this time - would there have been fees? And since it was known who was buried any fee could still have been charged - or did they hope to get away without it being known? (was any fee for the ground or the priest's work in taking the burial service?)
Presumably absentee clergy wasn't an issue or many more such burials would be expected - or did they happen and burial registers fail to record them, or record them without comment? But absentee clergy could have made such burials easier / more likely for other reasons - e.g. a contagious disease, if people feared waiting a few days till they could get a priest.
