Name Arthur Charles GOATHAM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Sep Q 1862 Bredgar, Kent, England - GRO ref: Goatham, Arthur Charles q3 1862 Milton RD 2a 604; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Millen.
Baptised 5 Mar 1865 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 19 Jun 2019)
Abode Bredgar, father George shown as a carpenter. Name shown as "Charley Arthur". Officially name at baptism is the right name and a birth registration can be updated - but in this case it was not the version he subsequently used.
Is the date right? - implies aged about 2.5, though no note in PR to indicate not a baby, but it would appear correct - it is between other baptisms the same day and they are all in chronological order with other entries in the register.
Gender Male Occupation From 1881 to 1888 Stonemason's labourer - Shown as a stonemason's labourer in the 1881 census; just recorded as a "working man" in the occupation column when his daughter Jane was baptised but when her birth was registered (a couple of days after her baptism) her father's occupation was given as 'Stonemason (Journeyman)'.
When he joined the army in 1883 he gave his 'trade or calling' as "mason" and answered the question
'Are you, or have you been, an Apprentice? if so, where? to whom? and for what period?' - "for 3 years to Mr Geere Sittingbourne".
Recorded as a journeyman stonemason (rather than a coachman on his death certificate.
Military Service From 5 Jan 1883 to 21 Aug 1883 Royal Engineers - Sapper - It is perhaps surprising that Arthur should choose to join the army, given that his older brother had already died as a consequence.
Joined at Rochester in Jan 1883, but was discharged just 6 months later. He was hosptialised suffering from tonsillitis with acute rheumatism, from 21 Feb to 15 April, when he was discharged to sick furlough.
However, he needed hospitalising again on 16th June [cause not yet deciphered] and appearing before a medical board at Chatham on 19th July was found 'unfit for further service'.
In consequence, he was discharged.
His military history sheet has 2 entries, one for 5 Jan to 31 July 1883, the other for 1 Aug to 21 Aug 1883, and his statement of services shows similar.
His conduct during his brief spell in the army was described as 'good'.
Also known as Charley Arthur GOATHAM Residence 15 Jul 1888 Floods Cottage, Duncan Road, Gillingham, Kent, England - Address at which his daughter Jane was born, and her mother's address then and the family's address at her baptism were given as Duncan Road.
(it is just possible that Jane was not born at home and that the family lived elsewhere in Duncan Road)
Residence 1891 3, Amy Terrace, Cliffe, Strood, Kent, England - Living at no. (1891); living at 293 High St, Rochester (1901).
Occupation From 1891 to 31 Mar 1901 Coachman and groom - Described as coachman groom (1891 census), and coachman (domestic) (on the 1901 census)
Occupation 1899 Charing, Kent, England Groom and gardener - When his daughter Henrietta was born
Residence 31 Mar 1901 293, High Street, Rochester, Kent, England - At the time of the census, withhis 'wife' Annie and 'daughters' Alice G. and Henrietta M.
Residence 1 Jul 1901 8, Whittaker Street, Chatham, Kent, England - Not only where his daughter Annie was born, but also given as her mother's residence when she registered the birth on 10 Aug. (I am assuming that Arthur was living there too, and that the family had not split up).
Occupation Foreman at Waterworks - According to the GRO death register entry his 'wife' Annie (née Finnis) she was the widow of "John [sic] Goatham, A Foreman at Waterworks"
Occupation 10 Aug 1901 Corn porter - Recorded when his daughter Annie was born
Occupation 17 May 1904 Foreman for Corporation Occupation 1905 General labourer [?] - His wife Annie (née Finnis) had a son, Arthur Charles in 1905. His GRO birth register entry names his father as 'Jack Goatham'. Was this a nickname for Arthur or made up because he was not the father? I don't know. If the reference is to Arthur, then I imagine the occupation refers to him.
Occupation 1907 Stonemason - Recorded in the burial register; also shown on his death registration, where qualified as journeyman stonemason.
Died 7 Mar 1907 4, Solomons Terrace, Chatham, Kent, England Cause: Morbus Cordis (Aortic Mitral Regurgitation) - 4 years/Syncope - GRO ref: GOATHAM, Arthur Charles aged 42 q1 1907 Medway RD 2a 526
Actual place from burial register; shown as 4 Solomons Square on his death certificate.

"Notice to Tradesmen,

answerable for any Debts contracted by my

In 1908 Arthur and Annie's oldest 3 daughters were baptised, between the death of their Arthur (1907) and of Annie (the mother) (1909). Strangely, the two youngest, Eva Alexandra and Arthur Charles, were not baptised at this time.
Subsequent records (marriage, 1939 register entry and death) can be found for 'Eva Alexandra', and with a unique pair of Christian names for the Goathams, there is no doubt the references are for this daughter of Arthur and Annie. The idea that both these children had died before their elder siblings were baptised can therefore be ruled out.
As Eva was living there is no reason to supposed Arthur Charles had died. However, no further record has been found for Arthur (but writing in 2020 I am sure he can no longer be living).
Perhaps Annie could not cope with 5 young children after the death of her husband and the youngest two went into care or were fostered / adopted. There was no formal adoption at this period and it seems to have varied whether children used their birth surname or that of their foster parents. I suspect Arthur may have used a different surname, and hence his absence from records.
