Occupation From 1861 to 1901 Carpenter etc. - According to 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1901 censuses
Residence From 1894 to 1905 The Union Workhouse, Milton next Sittingbourne, Kent, England - In the census by 1894, possibly put there after he was found guilty of beggin in 1891. There at the time of the 1901 census, and died there, it seems likely he was there continuously from 1894 or earlier to his death in 1905.At a meeting of Milton Guardians on 12 Dec 1894 the Chairman (Mr R J Tylden) described a letter received concerning Michael. This was reported in The Faversham News:
"The Chairman said he had also received a lengthy and rambling letter from an old man named Hill, an inmate of the house, complaining another inmate, Michael Goatham, was continually quarrelling with him. Goatham is notorious for disturbing the peace of the house, and had been before the magistrates for that offence. It was stated, however, that Hill was cantankerous, and that it was a case of six to one and half-a-dozen to the other. - The Master was ordered to promote peace between the enemies, so far a lay in his power."

Something must have gone wrong with Michael, or between him and his wife, as he was not with her by 1891 (census), and was found guilty of begging in High Halden that year. That may have led to his admission to the Milton Union Workhouse, as he was in there by 1894, and recorded as a pauper inmate in the 1901 census.
