    • From FamilySearch
I have not discovered another marriage of a Robert and Jane who could be the parents of Charlotte and her siblings. This one seems likely, being not far from Faversham and the date fits well with the children baptised in Faversham.

    Family 1 Charles EVANS,   d. Between 1838 and 1841
    Married Bef 1841
    • Assuming Charles and Charlotte did marry, it must have been before Charlotte remarried in 1841, and probably before their daughter Jane was born in 1839.

No marriage found on FreeBMD (covers July 1837 on),  in the indexes to Kent marriages on FMP, nor on Ancestry which covers much of London.
No death of a Charles Evans found near Faversham, the only deaths of Evans registered in the area in the right timeframe have the wrong forename and seem too old to be likely: James (Evans or Evians) in Hollingbourn 1838, aged 47 and John in Blean RD in 1840, aged 77. This begs the question: did he exist? If he was created to disguise an illegitimate birth (which seems unlikely given how common they were and how generally accepted by the working class) Charlotte seems to have gone to great lengths to maintain the fiction.

    • GRO ref: GOATHAM, William to EVANS, Charlotte q2 1841 Milton RD 5 441
Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 20 Jun 2019)
Charlotte was shown as a widow when she married William, with her father named as 'Robert Barrel', though 'Barrel' seems to be a mistake for 'Barrow'. Her maiden name is variously shown as Barrow or Evans on the birth certificates of her children (information from the GRO online index, viewed 5 Nov 2016).

The censuses show Charlotte was born about 1817 in Faversham and there is a Charlotte Barrow who fits this perfectly. In addition, in the 1841 census Charlotte Barrow's mother is living in Bredgar very close to William and Charlotte (just a couple of entries apart on the census), with an Aylett family. It seems that Charlotte's sister Ann had married one John Aylett in 1834, and Ann's mother was with them. I think it probable that after Charlotte was widowed by the death of her 'Evans' husband she went to live with or at least visited her mother and sister in Bredgar, and thus got to know neighbour William Goatham.

William was still shown as married not a widower in the 1871 census, but Charlotte was not with him and their 3 youngest. She was living in her birthplace Faversham when she died; whether she had left him and was there in 1871 I don't know.
