1851 census

Shown as a retired carpenter in the 1871 census.
Residence 1841 Silver Street, Bredgar, Kent, England - With his second wife Lucy and 4 children (all from his second marriage - George,Thomas,Michael and Mary).
Occupation From 1843 to 1861 Bredgar, Kent, England Parish clerk - George may well have been the Parish Clerk up until he left Bredgar, probably in the 1860s, unless he was suffering from ill-health before this. Usually it was a post for life, but George left the parish before this. The PRs may gives clues as to when he became the parish clerk and when he ceased to act as such - not yet studied. Certainly by 1843, the earliest record of which I know so far recording his in this role.
At the same time as carpenter - recorded as such at baptism of his youngest in 1843, also 1851 census and when his wife Lucy died (given as his sole occupation on her death cert.)
Occupation 1844 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England Carpentry work on the church gallery - I think it was probably the George Goatham who church accounts show to have been paid in 1844 for making changes to the gallery to accomodate the organ.
Residence 1861 Doctors Cottages, Bredgar, Kent, England - With his daughter Rebecca. His son George and family were the next household recorded in the census.
Residence 1871 Minster, Sheppey, Kent, England - With his son William

There was also a marriage of a Sarah Hunt to a Richard Friend in Teynham in 1829, but given that this Sarah would by then have been aged about 38 I don't think it was likely to have been her. - [S40] Bredgar Parish Registers (KFHS transcribed data), Kent Family History Society, Entry for the marriage of George Goatham to Lucy Leeds.
