Amos Edwin WELCH

-
Name Amos Edwin WELCH Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Sep Q 1865 Eynsford, Kent, England - GRO ref: Welch, Amos Edwin q3 1865 Dartford RD 2a 314; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Goatham
Gender Male Education 1871 Finchley, Middlesex, England Scholar Occupation 1881 Errand boy - Living with his parents in Finchley, presumably working near there
Occupation From 1890 to 1901 Middlesex, England Gardener - Probably near Whetstone in 1890 where he was living at the time of his marriage.
Head Gardener (domestic) in 1901 when he was living in Finchley (though Whetstone is not shown on the census form, the address of Woodside Home is shown today as being in Whetstone).
In 1901 the family were next door to Woodside Home - it may have been in the grounds of this institution that Amos was gardening. (Woodside Home was an institution where a large proportion of the patients had arthritis, rheumatism, paralysis; also failry common were hemiplegia, neuralgia and simply "debility" while a few had senile decay.)
However, Woodside Home does not appear in nearby census entries in 1891 when the family were already at 4 Woodside Cottages so it may be chance (in that year Amos was "gardener" rather than "head gardener"). A neighbour at 3 Woodside Cottages (in 1891) was a platelayer on the railway so not all the cottages were occupied by workers at the home (if it had been built by then)
Residence From 1891 to 1901 4, Woodside Cottages, Finchley, Middlesex, England - In census with wife and 2 sons
Died Dec Q 1952 Hendon Reg Dist, London, England - GRO ref: WELCH, Amos E q4 1952 Hendon RD 5e 548 aged 87; GRO online index shows middle name as Edwin

Both George and Maria were described as of 4 Anns Place, Lant Street, Borough at the time of their getting married. They were bachelor and spinster, marr by banns, both were "of full age" and signed; the witnesses were Henry and Sarah Russell who also signed.
(I have copy of PR entry)
In the 1861 census Maria and her baby son were living with other households in (?London Sq, Harrhead), Sevenoaks. In the same house was 29 yr old James Welch & family - relatives of George? Could be how Maria and George met.
