    • From a newspaper article when Jack was a prisoner of war in WW2 he attended the Pettman Central School, but would actually have been known as the Central School for Boys when he was there, as it was only renamed the Pettman Central School in 1938 (and that name did not last long, as the school did not reform after the war)..

      PRISONERS IN ITALY

      NEWS OF MARGATE SAPPERS

Two Margate sappers who were reported missing in North Africa just over a month ago are now known to be prisoners of war in Italy.

One is Sapper Jack Walter Osborn, Royal Engineer, of 98 Glencoe Road, Margate, whose wife received official news on Friday that he was a prisoner in Italian hands.  The next day she received a letter from him saying there was no need to worry, as the billets were quite good and he was receiving Red Cross parcels each week.

Sapper Osborn, who is twenty-nine years of age, is the son of Mrs and the late Mr W.D.Osborn, of Westfield Road, Margate.  Joining the Army in 1940, he went abroad in November last year, after being trained in chemical warfare.  He is an old boy of Pettman Central School, and was employed as a clerk by a firm of ice manufacturers before the war.  He played football and cricket for his school and later for the Old Centrals Association and Margate Thursday FC.
