Also known as Robert Johnson BROWN Residence 1841 Cove Passage, Weymouth, Dorset, England Occupation Blyth, Earsdon, Northumberland, England Blacksmith Occupation Ship Smith - Given as his occupation on his widow Barbara née Hutchinson's death certificate. According to this Wikipedia article the use of iron instead of wood as the primary material used for ships' hulls began in the 1830s. As a blacksmith I guess it may have been this change of material that led to Robert moving from traditional blacksmith work to being a ship smith. However, since this change happened after Robert had left Barbara, it seems most likely he had been working on ship't metal fixtures and fittings at the time they were still mainly made of wood. And although there was some shipbuilding in Bridport Robert is said to have been working at the iron works, where the work would not have been specifically that of a ship's smith.
It may be that he left Barbara and his family in Newcastle by taking a job on board a ship as their smith, and then decided not to return home.
Died 14 May 1846 North Quay, Weymouth, Dorset, England Cause: Consumption of the lungs, 1 year - GRO ref: BROWN, Johnson q2 1846 Weymouth RD 8 100; GRO online index shows age at death as 62
Details from his death certificate. Although shown as dying on the 'Fourteenth' I wonder if this should be the 'Nineteenth'? 14 and 19 can look similar, and the death was not registered until the twentieth, an unusually long time after, and at that time a burial 9 days after the death would also have been unusual.
