Name Samuel BAILEY Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Residence From 1838 to 1851 Berry Lane, Kingsteignton, Devon, England - In 'village', Kingsteignton in 1841 (adjacent entry is Berry Lane); in Berry Lane, Kingsteignton in 1851. Berry Lane is also shown as his mother's address when she registered Samuel's birth.
Born 25 Jan 1838 Kingsteignton, Devon, England - GRO ref: Balley, Samuel q1 1838 Newton Abbot RD 10 154; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Vogwill (both typed up copy of original index, on FreeBMD, and GRO online index, show the surname as 'Balley' but mother's maiden name, date and place clearly point to it being this Samuel)
Date and place from his birth certificate.
Baptised 25 Feb 1838 St. Michael’s Church, Kingsteignton, Devon, England - From DFHS index of PR entries (on FMP, viewed 2 Jan 2013)
Samuel Bailey, son of William (thatcher) and Elizabeth
Gender Male Education Possibly none - Could only make his mark on his marriage certificate although he appears to have filled in the 1911 census form (unless someone did this for him and signed in his name)
Residence 1861 Pennycomequick, Whitchurch, Devon, England - From Census Return
Pennycomequick is on the OS map at SX515740
Samuel was with his father, William, his sister Jemimah and his cousin Emanuel Vogwill at the time of the 1861 census.
Occupation 1861 Pennycomequick, Whitchurch, Devon, England Copper miner - Although recorded as a copper miner on the Census of 7th / 8th April 1861, Samuel was described simply as a labourer on his marriage cert. later that year (he married on 17 Nov 1861).
Occupation 1864 Bedford Bridge, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England Mine labourer - He was living in Bedford Bridge Cottages when his first daughter Hannah was born in 1864, and at that time was a "mine labourer". Bedford Bridge is about half a mile north of Horrabridge, a couple of miles from Buckland Monachorum village; the main industry in Horrabridge was copper and tin mining.
I don't know if Samuel was mining copper and / or tin.
Residence From 1866 to 1869 Zoar, St. Budeaux, Devon, England - On his son Henry's birth certificate and the PR entry for his daughter Emily's baptism
Occupation 1866 St. Budeaux, Devon, England Labourer on the government works - He was living in St. Budeaux so I guess was working near here.
Occupation 1869 St. Budeaux, Devon, England Labourer on Forts - At the time of his daughter Emily's baptism
Occupation 1870 Clearbrook, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England Farm labourer - (Abode and occupation from daughter Mary Ann's birth certificate; I assume that as he was living there Samuel was also working there)
Although a farm labourer, Samuel was living in Clearbrook, a hamlet someway from Buckland Monachorum village, though in the Parish. The hamlet is believed to have become established due to mining in the 1850s, and mining was the main source of employment. Samuel may have worked both on the land and in the mine according to the season.
Occupation From 1871 to 1872 Rosedale West, Yorkshire, England Ironstone miner - (Evidence: 1871 Census and son John's birth cert)
Residence 1874 75, Cleveland Street, Liverton Mines (als New London), Yorkshire, England - Sometime between the birth of son John in May 1872 and the birth of daughter Eliza in April 1874 the family moved nearly twenty miles north to the newly opened Liverton Mines, near Lofthouse (as it was then, now Loftus).
The Loftus History website covers the area.
Occupation 1874 Liverton Mines (als New London), Yorkshire, England Ironstone miner - (from dau Eliza's birth registration)
Information about the mine can be found on the Hidden Teeside website, and also on East Cleveland Image Archive website.
Residence 1875 Jane Street, Downs, Hetton-le-Hole, Co. Durham, England - At the time of his daughter Hannah's death.
Residence 1881 Station Town, Co. Durham, England - Station Town Milbank Tc, nr Hutton Henry, Durham in 1881(PRO Ref RG11 4971 / 86, page 60) (children Wm-younger Eliz bar Hannah);
Occupation 1881 Station Town, Co. Durham, England Coal miner Residence 1891 Grainger Terrace, Cocken, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham, England - At the time of the 1891 census the family were living in 4 rooms here. The census shows 5 children (John-Edith) present but not Samuel's wife, who was visiting their eldest daughter - she was staying, listed as a visitor, at the house where Emily was a servant.
Occupation 1891 Grainger Terrace, Co. Durham, England Coal miner Retired From 1901 to 1915 Sycamore Street, Annfield Plain, Co. Durham, England - I don't know when Samuel retired but it was by the time of the 1901 census. Aged only about 63, this seems quite young (for that time) to have retired - I don't know if he retired early due to ill health. He had certainly had a tough life, and copper mining not only had the dangers inherent in any mining but resulted in copper poisoning and an early death. Clearly Samuel had not been a copper miner long enough to suffer an early death, but a lower level of poisoning may still have affected his health. The 1911 census shows he was in receipt of money from the old age pensioners relief fund.
In 1901 the family were in Annfield Plain - the three youngest children were living at home (Elizabeth, Samuel and Edith), and with Samuel junior working as a miner, Samuel senior and Elizabeth may well not have moved away until he had married (1905) and set up home of his own. By then Elizabeth junior had also married (1902), while Edith moved with them.
Residence From 1911 to 1915 Garden Street, Houghall, Co. Durham, England In retirement ... - Living at 14 Garden Street, Houghall by the time of the 1911 Census, he died there in 1915 as did his wife (at the same address as in the census) in 1928. (Houghall is on the edge of Durham city, the Durham side of the river in the Shincliffe direction).
The 1911 census shows that by then only one of the 11 children born to Samuel and Elizabeth had died (this would be Hannah), and Edith, their youngest, was still living with them.
(Samuel's son Henry subsequently lived in Garden St., being there by 1938, but was still in Dawdon in 1923 so appears not to have been there at the same time as his parents.)
Died 29 Oct 1915 Houghall, Co. Durham, England Cause: Cerebral haemorrhage, 2 days - GRO ref: Bailey, Samuel q4 1915 aged 77 Durham RD 10a 485
The death was registered by his son Samuel, and as at "Houghall St. Oswald, Durham".

Father William BAILEY, b. Abt 1802, Kingsteignton, Devon, England , d. 29 Oct 1874, Nutley Chapel, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 72 years) Mother Elizabeth VOGWELL, b. Abt 1805, Whitchurch, Devon, England , d. 4 Jan 1880, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 75 years) Married 1 Apr 1825 Walkhampton Church, Walkhampton, Devon, England - From the DFHS index of PR entries: shows William Bealey mar Elizabeth Vogwill (I haven't yet seen actual entry)
Whitchurch is about 28 miles from Kingsteignton, and only about half a miles less from Teigngrace. So how did William from the Kingsteignton / Teigngrace area meet Elizabeth from the Whitchurch area?
William's older sister Jane had got married in 1816 to one Henry Vogwell; Henry was the uncle of William's bride so I guess it was through his sister Jane that William met Elizabeth.
But of course this then creates the question: how had Jane from the Kingsteignton / Teigngrace area met Henry from the Whitchurch area?
