Father John HEAD, d. Yes, date unknown Mother Nancy HAMBLING, b. Abt 1783, Blackawton, Devon, England , d. Aft 1831 (Age ~ 49 years)
Other Partners: CREW[?] m. Abt 1808; John LAKE m. 7 May 1816Married Abt 1806 - When Reuben married he gave his father's name as John Head. Those who were illegitimate often seemed to name fictional fathers on marriage certs., probably to hide the fact they were illegitimate. However, in that case the surname would be expected to be the same. Reuben married with the surname Hambling, so there is no obvious reason why he would name his father as John Head unless he understood him to be.
There were John Heads baptised near Blackawton of an age that they could well have been his father.
(One baptised in Dartmouth in 1769, one in Halwell in 1785, another in Halwell in 1752. A John Head was 'of Blackawton' when he married in Dartmouth in 1807 - possibly one of these baptisms, and clearly in Blackawton around the right time to be Reuben's father)
