Name Charles Henry ("Charlie") HAMBLING Nickname Charlie Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 9 May 1878 Blomfield Mews, Paddington, London, England - GRO ref: Hambling, Charles Henry q3 1878 Kensington RD 1a 14; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Issell
Actual date from 1939 registration
Baptised 22 May 1878 St. Saviour’s Church, Paddington, London, England - PR entry for bapt gives names in order Henry Charles, shows parents as James Bartlett and Florence, abode 15 (Blom?)field Mews, father's occupation shown a carpenter; by R West. P in the margin by the entry I think indicates the baptism was private - suggests his life was at risk at this stage.
Gender Male Education 1891 Scholar Charles Henry Hambling at school
"Bert" and his brother Charles in a school photo, probably in the Paddington or Harlesden area. (The family were living in Paddington by 1876, still there 1881, in Harlesden by 1891; I don't know when they moved or if they lived elsewhere inbetween).
Bert is the highlighted figure in the back row, Charlie highlighted in the centre.
(My identification based on other photos of them is confirmed by marks on the photo card)Occupation 1911 Stoke Fleming, Devon, England Carpenter Occupation Bef 1935 Stoke Fleming, Devon, England Barber - Although his main job was carpentry, I was told by someone who remembered him (Christian Dietz, b. 1906 told me in 1988) that he cut the hair of men in the village.
Occupation Bef 1939 Carpenter and joiner - Shown as retired in the 1939 registration, so I don't know if he continued to work as a carpenter at all after moving to Paignton.
War Service 1939 Paignton, Devon, England Special Constabulary - I guess that 'Uncle Charlie' acted as a Special Constable throughout the Second World War, although I only know of him being one from the 1939 registration.
The idea of a part-time constable to assist in keeping law and order dates back to the Statute of Winchester of 1285, the role being extended by Charles II in 1673, who was concerned that attempts to enforce religious conformity might result in public disorder. Charles II therefore ruled that any citizen could be sworn in as a temporary peace-officer for a specific occasion, particularly when there was a threat of great disturbances.
A body similar to the one existing today came into existence at the beginning of World War One: a voluntary, part-time organisation, paid only their expenses. During the Second World War about 130,000 Special Constables acted as the wartime police reserve, supplemented by retired police officers recalled to duty to assist.

Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 10 Sep 2020)Florence's 1st cousin Louisa Jane PITTS was a witness; although she lived in Stoke Fleming she was close to Florence in age which might have encouraged a friendship, although the cousins lived a few miles apart. She was also related to James (2nd cousin once removed) and probably knew him also as both lived in Stoke Fleming. Had she introduced the couple to each other?
Wedding Anniversary 29 May 1924 Stoke Fleming, Devon, England Golden - This Anniversary is noted in Auntie Ivy's date book but I have not found evidence of any celebration, or of any photo. Have not (yet) looked in local papers.
However, according to marriage certificate it would have bee 29 April 1924!
