This is unusual in being a gravestone engraved on 2 sides (on the other are the earlier inscriptions to William's wife and 2 children)
On the right of the photo, just behind the fence, can be seen the left edge of the gravestone in memory of 3 other children of William and Susan.
The square topped stone that can just be seen behind this stone is that of William's maternal grandparents, James and Sarah Baker; the small round topped stone to the left of that is his uncle, another James…

Siblings 6 brothers and 5 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch John HAMBLING, b. Est 1654, d. Nov 1732, Berry Pomeroy, Devon, England (Age ~ 78 years) (3 x Great Grandfather)
Johane BASTARD, b. Est 1628, d. Yes, date unknown (4 x Great Grandmother)Notes - This must be one of the most tragic families on my tree.
Although he died aged only 50, William's wife and 6 of his 9 children pre-deceased him. On William Baker Hambling's death his father became guardian to the 3 remaining children (who were all still minors); when their grandfather died some 2 years later I guess their Hambling grandmother took over; their other grandmother was still alive, but living in Islington in London. Two of the remaining 3 children died before either of their grandmothers; both died in Devon.

Wills (transcripts) The will of William's grandfather, James Hambling
William was left all of his grandfather's working tools except for a lathe left to his brother James. One of four of James's grandsons to follow in his footsteps as a gunsmith, but at 25 the only one old enough to have started in business by the time of his grandfather's death, these tools were presumably very useful. (The others who became gunsmiths were aged only about 4 to 15 when their grandfather died)
William was also left a bed. He had married the year before his grandfather wrote his…
