Name David Leighton BLACK Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1840 Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland Gender Male Residence From 1871 to 1881 184, Perth Road, Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland - Sometime between the birth and death of his son in 1865 David with his wife Catherine must have moved back to his birthplace, Dundee. At 184 Perth Road in 1871, still in Dundee in 1881 (exact address unknown). David and Catherine returned to her birthplace, Ealing, between 1881 and 1891.
(1871 and 1881 data from data transcribed on Ancestry, actual census entries not seen).
Residence From 1891 to 1911 Lothian House, The Green, Ealing, Middlesex, England - Shown in the 1901 census as living at Lothian Cottage, The Green, Ealing with his second wife, his adopted son Clive and an 81 year old boarder, James Bull. However, as he had been living at Lothian House, The Green in Ealing in 1891 and was in 1911 I think 'Cottage' was probably an error in the 1901 census.
Occupation From 1901 to 1911 House decorator Died 7 Oct 1919 Brentford Reg Dist, Middlesex, England - Date from memoriam card.
GRO ref: Black, David L aged 79 Brentford RD 3a 138; GRO online index shows middle name as Layton
In memoriam card for David Black Buried South Ealing Cemetery, Ealing, Middlesex, England - Grave No. 48 I D Cons. (from an In Memoriam card)
Notes - Middle name: although spelt Layton following David's death he himself spelt it as Leighton in the 1911 census.

Details from PR entry (image on Ancestry, viewed 17 Apr 2017)
Only the one biological son found, but that was looking in the England and Wales GRO online index; David and Catherine may have had other children born in Scotland, but if so it seems that none survived to be recorded in a census.
In 1871 a seven year old nephew David R Smith was living with them, in 1881 a seventeen year old nephew Donald G Smith.

Photos Lothian House
I think my gt gt grandmother Mary nee Beaton probably lived at Lothian House from the time she married David Black in 1899 until she moved to Boston towards the end of her life (between 1924, when her daughter moved to Boston, and 1933, when she died).
I guess that one of the men is David Black; it seems most likely that the one standing is David and the one seated is James Bull, the elderly boarder living with the family at the time of the 1901 census.
