Name Mary BEATON Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 20 Jun 1843 South Mundham, Pagham, Sussex, England - Auntie Ivy's date book gives the date as 21st May. I don't know which is correct. Certificates are not always correct, and since I have a GRO copy rather than a copy of the local certificate there was another level of transcription where the wrong date (e.g. from the next entry in the register) could accidentally have been copied.
Name is Mary Bacon on her birth certificate. Mother's residence is given simply as Pagham i.e. no mention of South Mundham, I'm not sure if this means she just went to South Mundham for her confinement, or if it is an abbreviation of the full address. (South Mundham in the parish of Pagham)
GRO ref: Bacon, Mary q2 1843 Westhampnett 7 493; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Weathers
Birth certificate for Mary Beaton Baptised 16 Jul 1843 St. Thomas à Becket Church, Pagham, Sussex, England - From IGI and transcribed data on SFHG members database
Latter shows Mary BACON, daughter of Charles and Mary, father a labourer, abode Nye Timber
Gender Female Residence 1851 North Bersted, South Bersted, Sussex, England - With her parents and 4 siblings, living in the parish of South Bersted, village of North Bersted at the time of the census - no further details to address.
Occupation 1861 6, Franklin Place, Chichester, Sussex, England House servant to laundress - From census (image on FMP, viewed 17 Jul 2022; previously seen on m/f at PRO - now TNA)
Residence 1871 5, Providence Terrace, Kensington, London, England - At the time of the census (2 / 3 April), also when his son Harry was baptised in the same year (2 May), when the place was given as Earls Court rather than Kensington.
Another family (4 people) were also living in the same house.
Residence 1881 5, Angel Yard, Brentford End, Isleworth, Middlesex, England - With her husband, 5 children and a lodger
Residence 1891 26, Avenue Road, Ealing, Middlesex, England - Mary was living with her 3 sons Albert, Harry and Arthur and daughter Minnie; also present but shown separately as a lodger and his wife were her son George and his wife Emma.
This was Minnie's home when she was baptised in 1892, and
Mary's son Harry was of this address when he married in 1893 so she was presumably still living there then. I expect she loved to Lothian Cottage when she married David Black in 1899.
The number of rooms is not shown, meaning there were at least 5.
Occupation 1891 Laundress Residence From 1901 to 1920 Lothian House, The Green, Ealing, Middlesex, England - With her second husband David and his (adopted) son Clive and a boarder in 1901. Still with her David and Clive at the time of the 1911 census. In 1911 Lothian House was shown as having 8 rooms. I believe it was the same place as shown as Lothian Cottage in the 1901 census, since David had been living at Lothian House in 1891.
Mary was still living in Lothian House when she wrote her will in 1920.
Moved Between 1921 and 1933 Boston, Lincolnshire, England From Middlesex to Boston - After spending her early years in Sussex (and possibly Hampshire), then most of her adult life in London / Middlesex, sometime between 1921* and her death in 1933 Mary moved to live near her only daughter to survive infancy, my great grandmother, in Boston in Lincolnshire. This seems a surprising move, given that she had several sons and lots of family in the Ealing area, but perhaps it was a daughter's care she needed in her final years, or she may have just had a stronger bond with her daughter - she did leave everything to her in her will.
(The daughter she moved to live near was living in Surrey at the time of the 1921 census; I have yet to find Mary in the census but don't believe she had any other reason to move to Boston than to be near that daughter).
Also known as Mary BACON Residence to 1933 2, Alma Villas, Freiston Road, Boston, Lincolnshire, England Home with her daughter in Boston - Her home at the time of her death. Whether she had lived with her daughter and son-in-law at their previous home in Boston, in Main Ridge, I don't know.
Buried Mar 1933 The Cemetery, Boston, Lincolnshire, England The grave of Mary Black
My 2 x great grandmother
Mary Black, formerly Court, nee Beaton, (1843 - 1933)
She had no gravestone but was buried in the spot behind the right of these 2 stones (this was a free plot on which no stone was allowed).Died 8 Mar 1933 The Poor Law Institution, 33, Skirbeck Road, Boston, Lincolnshire, England Cause: I Arterio sclerosis; II old age No P.M. - GRO ref: Black, Mary q1 1933 aged 89 Boston RD 7a 690
Her death was announced in 'The Lincolnshire and Boston Guardian' of 18 Mar 1933 (p. 9, col. 2)
"OCTOGENARIAN'S DEATH. - The death occurred at the Poor Law Institution on Wednesday week of Mary Black, of 2, Alma Villas, Freiston-road, Boston, at the age of 89 years."
Siblings 5 brothers and 3 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch John BACON, b. Abt 1734, Sussex, England , bur. 24 Apr 1789, St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, South Bersted, Sussex, England (Age ~ 55 years) (2 x Great Grandfather)
Mary HARRES, d. Yes, date unknown (2 x Great Grandmother)Notes - Presumably due to the move to Boston all of Mary's family items - her marriage certificate, photos, will and a family Bible were inherited probably first by her daughter and then her granddaughter Ivy Stainton nee Hambling, my great aunt, who also lived in Boston. Ivy being childless they then went to my mother and so I have been fortunate enough to inherit them.
Some clues in the form of Christian names and the odd place / relationship on photos have helped my researchs which have enabled me to identify a few, but unfortunately a number remain unidentified; they can be seen on my most wanted page.
