Name John INMAN Suffix [ONS gp] [Parents?] Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1753 Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England - The two sets of parents shown are in this case 2 possibilities, I do NOT mean that e.g. John was the biological son of Jane but brought up as son of John and Susanna.
My research is beginning to suggest 'my' John was the son of Jane; I think the Benjamin Inman who died in 1854, having been described as 'retired linen manufacturer' in the 1851 census, was a son of John and Susanna, whilst I think my John and his first wife Mary was described as 'poor' when a number of his children were buried (this being recorded generally between 1783 and 1794 due to a tax on PR entries that did not apply to paupers).
It seems unlikely the fortunes of two sons would have been so different.

"31 May John the son of John & Susanna Inman Knares"
Baptised 1 Oct 1753 St. John the Baptist Church, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England - Two John Inmans baptised in Knaresborough in 1753, but at present I don't know which I am descended from. I am adding info. from both baptism enties, and will add families that I discover for relatives of both, to see if either yields information which confirms or rules either out.

"Oct. 1st John the son of Jane Inman Illegitimate"
Gender Male Died Between 1834 and 1836 - As not with wife and family in 1841, had probably died by then, and probably alive when his last child was baptised, at least when he was conceived so cannot have died before 1817. Since I can find no likely death registration for him, probably died before July 1837.
(I found a possible death of John - Mar q 1841 vol. 23 p.221 Knaresborough RD but when I applied for the cert I was told the index entry was wrong! - should be Ann, the GRO are correcting indexes where possible).
With burial registers giving an age by 1817, there are two burials in the likely place, Knaresborough, which could be this John.
I now believe John was one of two John Inmans baptized in Knaresborough in 1753. Both of these appear to have remained in Knaresborough, one dying in 1834 and the other in 1836. So far I have not found any evidence that would indicate which burial was whose.
('Parish Chest' documents may give a clue, I have not yet checked for or looked at any for Knaresborough).
Buried Between 1834 and 1836 St. John the Baptist Church, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England Occupation Bef 1836 Weaver - Described as such in sons Philip's and Isaiah's marriage certificates and his second wife's death certificate.

Not clear if June or July - follows marriages on 30 June, but 'July' is written by the next marriage; I suspect July written a little low down in the register.
"[June / July] 6 - John Inman & Susanna Thompson _ P"
(all entries have 'P' or 'L' by them, I assume L means licence so P means Banns)
Only Anne, John and Samuel are recorded at baptism as the children of John and Susanna, the other 4 I suggest as their children here simply being shown as the children of 'John'. It seems unlikely that John and Susanna would have had two children reasonably soon after marriage (i.e. in 1751 and 1753) and then no more until 1763, so the 3 daughters of a John neatly fill that gap. Benjamin then is at a reasonable gap after Samuel. However, it seems Benjamin was a linen manufacturer. The John b. 1753 I believe I descend from was a pauper when most of his children were buried (in the 1780s and 1790s), unlikely to have a brother who was a linen manufacturer. But if Benjamin was NOT the son of John and Susanna, then they could still be the parents of 'my' John. Samuel was a hairdresser and perfumer when he died in 1826, which sounds to me a more humble occupation, more consistent with being my John's brother.

Family 1 Mary GROVES, b. Est 1755, d. 1808 (Age ~ 53 years) Married 15 Mar 1780 St. John the Baptist Church, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England - At the time of his marriage to Mary SERVANT John was shown as a widower. It is likely he had not been a widower for long, a few months to a few years would be typical. The only burial I have found in Knaresborough burial register likely to be his wife was the same year, a few months before he remarried: the burial of a Mary Inman.
The burial register does not record Mary's age at her death, but she is named as the wife of John, and this marriage appears the only likely one. John must have died after 1817 (as his youngest son was born in 1818), and the only likely burials are for Johns in 1834 and 1836. Both suggest a birth about 1853, a year in which two John Inmans were baptised in Knaresborough, and which fits well with a 1780 marriage.
Details of marriage from PR entry (image on Ancestry and FMP)
Both made their marks, witnesses were John Saner and Richard Johnson (Richard Johnson was a witness to many marriages around this time - usually a sign of a person being Parish Clerk, but a Robert Latham was also witness to many - perhaps they were sharing the job)
Another John Inman and a Mary had married in 1769, so could still have been having children after 1780, but as their are no baptisms and / or burials of children of a John and Mary in the period 1769-1780 it seems reasonable to suppose those after 1780 were the children of this John and Mary. (There was not another marriage of a John Inman to a Mary in Knaresborough until this John remarried in 1808). Of course there is the possibility of a John and Mary moving into the parish from elsewhere, or a John from Knaresborough marrying elsewhere and bringing his bride back to Knaresborough, but I have not spotted a likely couple, and the children seem consistent with being those of one couple.
