Name Hannah BICKERDYKE Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Dec Q 1856 Great Ouseburn, Yorkshire, England - GRO ref: Bickerdyke, Hannah q4 1856 Gt Ouseburn RD 9a 84; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Metcalfe
Gender Female Residence 1861 Occupation 1871 “Royal Oak Inn”, Market Place, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England General servant - domestic - In the household of Innkeeper John Swale, shown as Ann Bickerdyke. Present on census night, besides Hannah, was just John, his 7 year old daughter and his widowed mother, shown as the housekeeper, suggesting the absence of John's wife was long-term.
Occupation 1881 York Place, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England General Servant - Live-in servant in the home of annuitant John Walton and his family, i.e. a household consisting 50 year old John, his wife, their two children, aged 4 and 3, and just one other servant - a children's nurse.
Occupation 1882 Kirkgate, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England Housekeeper - At the time the birth of her daughter Laura was registered. I suspect she was housekeeper to Laura's father, Philip Inman, by then a widower, and who she married the following year. (Philip did not register the birth of Laura with Hannah, and so he is not named on the birth registration, but claimed her as his natural daughter in his will).
Census 5 Apr 1891 Kirkgate, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England Residence 1901 Residence 1911 Residence 1921 Died 9 Aug 1924 90, Wood Street, Norton, Malton, Yorkshire, England - Son Philip Inman in one of his autobiographies refers to his mother dying aged 67 i.e. in 1923 or 1924 and dedicates a book published in 1927 to his late mother.
Several Hannah Bradleys died at about the right age at that time, but none in Knaresborough. PI refers to returning to Yorkshire but not where so I'm not sure if she did die in Knaresborough. She was in Malton at the time of the 1911 census.
Clearly she was not the Hannah Bradley who died in Knaresborough RD in 1935
Probate 19 Aug 1924 York, Yorkshire, England Calendar entry - "Fisher Hannah of 90 Wood-street Norton Malton Yorkshire widow died 9 August 1924 Probate York 19 August to Henry Inman manager and Arthur Inman hotel proprietor.
Effects £521 13s. 8d."

Photos Philip Inman's home in Kirkgate
My 2 x great grandfather seems to have been living in Kirkgate by 1851 and until his death in 1894. These cottages include the one where his youngest son Philip was born in 1892, and this was quite likely where he had lived for all of those years, with both his wives and families.
Described by Philip Inman junior (b.1892) in his autobiography "No Going Back" (p.11):
The home I was born into was a cottage, one of a row of four, long since demolished. They were whitewashed and had thatched…
