  • Name Elizabeth HANNAFORD
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born
    • Assuming no younger than 15 or older than 50 when children born, could have been anytime between 1745 and 1765!
    Baptised
    • The most likely place for Elizabeth's baptism would seem to be Widecombe.

There were no less than 6 Elizabeth Hannafords baptised there between 1748 and 1761 (searched between 1745 and 1765), also a Betty in 1758! Probably others in neighbouring parishes (not investigated). I'm a bit doubtful it will be possible to work out which one 'my' Elizabeth was with certainty.

I did think the most likely was the Elizabeth baptised 4 Jan 1748/49, the daughter of John and Rebecca. I had tentatively added her to my tree.

A John died in 1750 and after that a John in the church rates for properties in the Hexworthy area was replaced by Rebecca, and Rebecca's entry was just before that of William Vogwill.
I thought it likely that George and Elizabeth met because both families lived close to each other in or near Hexworthy. The area covered by the Widecombe church rates at this time (some of it strictly in Lydford parish, which covered most of Dartmoor) was large and rural; it seems unlikely George would have known most of the Elizabeth Hannafords, in the way he might if they had lived in a village, so that he should marry one from the Hexworthy / Sherberton area seems likely and this is the only one for whom I have spotted a link to that area. As I did more research the links between the Cleave family (Rebecca's birth family) and the Vogwills became greater.

However, a different Elizabeth (to the one that married George Vogwell) was married in Widecombe in 1770 and unless the marriage was of a widow it would seem to be one of the two Elizabeth's baptised in 1748/9. The other of these Elizabeths was the daughter of Henry and Mary, and likely the first cousin of Elizabeth daughter of John and Rebecca. Although Henry probably grew up in Hexworthy, the rest of his and Mary's children were baptised in Holne, the last showing they were then living in Buckfastleigh parish. It is therefore much less likely that their daughter would have known George Vogwell, and as the groom of the 1770 bride, Edward Stranger, was himself 'of Holne' (at marriage, and had been baptised there in 1745) it is also at first seemed most likely that Henry and Mary's daughter married in 1770.
However, when I looked at the children of Edward and Elizabeth Stranger it quickly became apparent that they had a son named John and a daughter named Rebecca, i.e. the names of the parents of the Elizabeth I thought was my ancestor. John is, of course, such a common Christian name that it would be unsafe to conclude anything from that alone. But Rebecca was a rare name in the area. I have found no evidence of it in the Stranger family. I think the conclusion is unavoidable that it is probable that the Elizabeth Hannaford who married Edward Stranger was the daughter of John and Rebecca, and therefore that Elizabeth cannot be the one who married George Vogwell!
I had done a little research into the Cleave alias Hammett family before coming to this conclusion, and am for the moment leaving them as an unattached family on my tree in case it is of use to anyone.

Shows George Vogwell married Elizabeth Hannaford, both otp, married by Banns, both made their mark as also did witness William Vogwell. The other witness was Nathaniel Tremill, who was witness to most marriages in Widecombe at this time and so almost certainly Parish Clerk. (William was probably George's brother though could have been his father. Siblings or other young people were more often witnesses than parents)
