From the verse of the Bible chosen to form part of the inscription on John's grave one might imagine his life was cutshort - but as the rest of the inscription shows, he actually made it to about 90.

Psalm 90 and 10th Verse.Probate 7 Apr 1845 Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London, England Will Siblings 2 brothers Half-siblings 1 half brother and 1 half sister (family of William VOGWELL and Catherine GIDLEY) Patriarch & Matriarch William VOGWELL, b. Est 1720, d. Nov 1789, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 69 years) (Father)
Joan WHITE, b. Est 1727, (probably), Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England , bur. 3 Jan 1792, St. Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 65 years) (Mother)Notes - Since John only refers to his children Johana, John and William in his will I suspect these were the only ones to survive him; the others I know of seem to have died young, if there were more surviving they had probably emigrated.
- (Research):I think I probably found John shown as son of William and Joan on the IGI. I don't know if there are any firm sources to confirm this.
There are several things that point to John being William's son:
- William and John both being buried in Whitchurch, though the family doesn't seem to be here earlier than these families;
- In John's will he mentions Thomas as his nephew (a trustee); William's son George had a son Thomas who would fit - especially as Thomas had married a Foote from Sampford Spiney, where John was farming, and the other trustee was a farmer, Richard Foote;
- John and the above George both gave similar names to their sons - though they were some of the commonest men's names at that time.
(The will of George who I believe to be John's brother is very brief and makes no mention of any siblings)
