Name William VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1720 - From one IGI entry; abt 1723, diff IGI entry - may just be guesses based on date of marriage. Both seem in any case reasonable estimates from date of marriage.
"Of Widecombe In The Moor" when marriage but baptism not found there so looks like he may have moved there before marriage.
Gender Male Civic duty 1759 Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England [1] Overseer of the Poor - To distribute the work of being a Churchwarden or Overseer of the poor many parishes allocated the role to those occupying different property in different years. Widecombe appears to have operated this system, and at the end of the accounts for the year 1758/9 we read in the nominations for the following year "We nominate ... Overseers of the poor ... Wm. Vogel for Lt. John Beards Tenmt[Tenement] in Hexworthy".
A William Vogwell was overseer again in 1775; his son with the name was too young in 1759 but could have been the overseer in 1775.
In the overseers accounts he is described as "William Vogwill for one of the Tenements in Sherbourn"
Indenture naming William as one of the overseers Residence 1759 Hexworthy, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England - As William was appointed overseer "for Lt. John Beards Tenmt[Tenement] in Hexworthy" I think that that was where he was living / farming.
The 1839 titthe apportionment shows a number of tenements at Widecombe of various sizes, not only do I not know which was William's, but neither do I know if any had increased in size due to newtake since his time. One entry is for "The Bearas near Hexworthy" (transcription on FODA website) I wonder if this should be Beards? (in 1839 it was 36½ acres).
Deponent 1773 - In (yet another) investigation as to whether the 'Forest Quarter' of Widecombe was in Lydford Parish and those with tenements there should pay tithes to the Rector of Lydford.
(DHC ref. 5542M/Z/4)
Poor Law Mar 1784 'In need' - * Possibly a payment to his son William. * (Both ultimately left Widecombe, maybe one had by this time but if so I don't know which)
The account for the 12th month in 1783-4 has an entry:
"paid William Fogwill In Need 0 1 0".
A few others had an 'in need' payment that month, but a large number the previous month - I wonder if an infectious disease was rampant and stopped people working for a while?
Died Nov 1789 Whitchurch, Devon, England Buried 26 Nov 1789 St. Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch, Devon, England - From PR (seen image)
'William Vogwell', unfortunately age not given.
Notes - I don't know for certain that the William who was married to Catherine was the same one who married Joan, but it seems most likely. If Catherine had died soon after giving birth William might have felt the need to find a new wife quickly to care for his children. More research / evidence needed.
- (Research):The Dartmoor Press transcripts do not contain alll of the baptisms and burial for Widecombe, though they do contain all of the marriages for 1573 to 1753. The absence of Vogwell marriages prior to William's may imply that he moved to Widecombe from elsewhere.
Does his first marriage being in Teigngrace (a few miles east of Widecombe) give a clue?
and Probate index (on Ancestry) shows quite a few Vogwells in Gidleigh, Chagford etc as shown below. Might be worth pursuing research in these parishes.

In addition, the FODA website shows a William Vogwill is listed in the Devon Freeholders Book under Gidley in 1721, 1733 and 1741 (they have transcribed the names from one book per decade). In 1741 he is shown as a yeoman. This is most likely the William with an entry in the calendar of wills and administrations in 1748.
Out of 33 names listed in the Parish Return towards the Rebuilding of St. Paul's Cathedral for Gidleigh in 1678 seven were Vogwells.
