"Carrying the C.I.V. invalid ashore at Southampton"

I don't know why this picture is here. I believe CIV must stand for the City Imperial Volunteers, about which more can be read in the Wikipedia article. Raised in January 1900 to fight in the South African War, it was a a composite battalion recruited from the London units. Presumably this invalid is someone who had previously served in the Cyclist unit with my great grandfather.
