Plan of graves in Blackawton Churchyard If using to find family graves, be warned it has some errors, especially where a person was given a surname as a 2nd Christian name - these tend to have been mis-understood as double-barrelled surnames and indexed as such. e.g. my ancestor William Bartlett HAMBLING is indexed under 'B' instead of 'H'. Some have been mis-understood as the whole surname, e.g. John Hingston STABB, shown on the gravestone as John Hingston, son of John and Elizabeth Stabb, has been taken to be John HINGSTON. (In other words, search for middle names shown in some way as a person's surn ame and you should find them). In a few instances two people has been indexed as one, e.g. the entry 'BURGOINE J M' is for the stone for John and Mary Burgoyne, 'BURGOYNE C E' is for the stone for sisters Ellen and Caroline. |

Possibly the gravestone of James Hambling (1762 - 1837) When I visited Blackawton churchyard in 2012 I had it in my mind that the "gravestone" of William Bartlett Hambling was a metal one near the south porch, that I had seen this on a previous visit, proably soon after my parents retired to Dartmouth in 1988, and thought how appropriate for a blacksmith. This memory was clearly wrong, it may well be that it was his father James who had a metal tablet. This time I saw no metal "gravestone", but did see this one, which appears to lack a metal plaque, and was close to the gravestones of James' grandson William Baker Hambling and his family. Hopefully somewhere amongst my notes I will come across a transcription; I'm sure I don't have a photo but maybe someone has? |

The wife, Susan nee Prout, and 2 children of William Baker Hambling This gravestone is close to that of the first 3 of William Baker Hambling's children to die, 2 in the same month as his wife, October 1855. This stone has the next of the family, the mother, Susan and then the next 2 children, William Bartlett and Mary Ann, on this side. The last child to die before William himself is commemorated on the other side of this same stone, and then finally William. One more child of William and Susan, Caroline, died and was buried in this graveyard nearly 6 years later, but does not seem to have been commemorated on a gravestone. |

Three children of William Baker and Susan Hambling The first 3 of William and Susan's children to die. None died as babies, at what was usually the most vulnerable time, but after the first, Fanny Maria, died aged 12 in 1854, 2 more were to die the following year. Selina was the youngest to die, at 2 years and 5 months, possibly missing a mother's care, since her mother was seriously ill at this time. The day after she was buried here further tragedy struck when James, aged about 6, fell into the River Dart and drowned, as is mentioned on the stone. |

William Baker Hambling and his daughter Elizabeth Susan This is unusual in being a gravestone engraved on 2 sides (on the other are the earlier inscriptions to William's wife and 2 children) On the right of the photo, just behind the fence, can be seen the left edge of the gravestone in memory of 3 other children of William and Susan. The square topped stone that can just be seen behind this stone is that of William's maternal grandparents, James and Sarah Baker; the small round topped stone to the left of that is his uncle, another James Baker. |

The wording for Dinah Although Dinah died before her father she appears to have had no headstone until after his death, and was mentioned after him. The gravestone is clearly lower in the ground than it was originally, and the wording for her is now largely hidden by ivy and other plants growing on the ground, or is below soil level. |

The grave of George Trant It is not clear from the gravestone if his daughter Sarah is also buried here, or just remembered on the stone. I suspect she was buried in Wales, especially as her name follows her father's, although she died 10 years earlier (although stones only being erected after a later death, not the first in a grave, are far from unknown) Inscription: In Memory of George Trant who departed this Life on the 9th day of January 1867 in the 78th year of his age. Also Sarah Daughter of the above who died in Wales on the 4th day of January 1857 Aged 42 Years. This grave is leaning towards that of Thomas Bellett and his wife Elizabeth; Elizabeth was a Trant before her marriage so this seems the part of the churchyard where the Trant family were buried. But so far (at the time of writing, March 2013) I have yet to find how the family of which Elizabeth was a member relates to my Trant ancestors / relations. |

The gravestone of Walter Narramore and his grandson John If you visit Ideford now it appears that Walter and John were buried not in the churchyard but in the body of the church. This was a more expensive option than a churchyard burial and if true would indicate the family were prospering at this time. However, they may not have been; when work was done on the floor a few years ago there were found to be no bones under that stone, or elsewhere in the area that the church covered in 1659. In the C19th the church was extended and a local archaeologist suggested that the stones now in the church may have stood / lain in the area now covered by the church and so been moved to the church floor. If that were the case, rather than the bones having been removed at some point (previous work on the floor?) then I think the stone was probably part of a table tomb. Although the tomb has a large uninscribed area which could have been to set it upright, it doesn't look long enough to me, compared with other stones I have seen the length of, and the border line goes around the whole stone, whereas the decoration is usually confined to that part which will be seen. (However, it is from a different era which I guess could explain these differences). Most interestingly, I was told the stone is not local, but a quality stone from the Yelverton area. Walter's heirs may not have paid extra for a burial in church but were clearly not short of a penny or two. I had seen mention of this gravestone before I visited Ideford, and expected to be searching amongst a number of such stones, but it is central in the nave, unmissable. The stone is inscribed:
Here Lyeth the Body of
Walter Narramore of
this P[ar]ish Yeoman who
was Buried the 20th Day
of April 1659 aged 99
Yeares
Also the Body of John
Narramore of Kings
Kerswell Grandson to
Walter Narramore
Who was Buried the 4th
Day of February 1687
Aged 55 Yeares.
(the fancy 'P' of Parish is a now archaic way of abbreviating the letters 'Par'; 'the' is inscribed on the stone as a thorn with a lower case 'e' above) |

The gravestone of two Spurrell sisters: Sarah Ann and Jane Two of the ten children of Thomas Spurrell and Sarah Wilcocks, buried adjacent to their parents. The first 5 children all married, of the next 3 two died unmarried as young adults, the fate of the 3rd I have not discovered, but the last two, Sarah Ann and Jane lived to good ages (80 and 96) but remained as spinsters. This, and their being buried in the same grave, may suggest they lived together, but this was not so; in fact the last census in which they are to be found together is in 1861 when, aged 28 and 22, they were still with their parents. Jane then lived at least until 1911 at Leewood, working as a dressmaker, whilst Sarah spent her life in service, with a different household at the time of each census, mostly in Devon but once in London. They may have lived togther in old age - I have found no evidence either way. |

Ann Kezia Kellond nee Wise The wife of Edwin Kellond (1841 - 1898) Although both Ann and her husband were born in Slapton they married in Kensington Reg Dist, and appear to have spent all of their married life in London. However, sometime during her long widowhood (just over 40 years) Ann seems to have returned to Slapton, where she is buried with her mother. Her mother outlived her husband by 12 years, so she may have returned to live with her mother for company - Edwin and Ann seem to have had no children - or it may have been a need to take care of her mother that brought her back to the village. |

The Glanville Memorial Said to be one of the best memorials of the period in Devon. I am guessing that the memorial is above where John and Alice were buried (or at least was, when first erected; sometimes these things are moved over the centuries). It is clear that John was buried in a chancel, since in her will his wife Alice requested 'My body ... the w[hi]ch I desire may receive Christian and decent buriall in the Chancell of the Church of Tavistocke by John Glanvill my first husband'. |

The grave of Edward Carter From the position of the inscription it looks as though it was planned that another be added. Perhaps the expectation was that his wife would be buried with him. Although she was buried at Whitchurch, there is no indication that it was with Edward. Perhaps her children decided she should be buried with her first husband, their father. |
