The gravestone of Jemima Arthur nee Spurrell and her daughter Rebecca Andrew(s) nee Bradford
The gravestone of Jemima Arthur nee Spurrell and her daughter Rebecca Andrew(s) nee Bradford
Buried near to Jemima parents in Sampford Spiney. Both women were married twice. Jemima's first husband, father of Rebecca, who died when his daughter was a baby, just 5 years after his marriage, was buried at St. Budeaux. I don't know where her second lies. I don't know when or where Rebecca's first husband died but her second is buried close to her in Sampford Spiney. The inscription reads:
In Loving Memory of Rebecca, the beloved wife of James Andrews, (of leewood in this parish) Who Died Novr. 22nd. 1910, Aged 86 Years. Also Jemima Arthur mother of the above Who Died Jany. 27th. 1854, Aged 60 Years.

The gravestone of two Spurrell sisters: Sarah Ann and Jane
The gravestone of two Spurrell sisters: Sarah Ann and Jane
Two of the ten children of Thomas Spurrell and Sarah Wilcocks, buried adjacent to their parents. The first 5 children all married, of the next 3 two died unmarried as young adults, the fate of the 3rd I have not discovered, but the last two, Sarah Ann and Jane lived to good ages (80 and 96) but remained as spinsters. This, and their being buried in the same grave, may suggest they lived together, but this was not so; in fact the last census in which they are to be found together is in 1861 when, aged 28 and 22, they were still with their parents. Jane then lived at least until 1911 at Leewood, working as a dressmaker, whilst Sarah spent her life in service, with a different household at the time of each census, mostly in Devon but once in London. They may have lived togther in old age - I have found no evidence either way.
