Wills (transcripts) The will of James' father, also called James Baker
Despite James senior's effects being valued at "under £300" he left just £10 to his son.
Before he reached the age of 40, some years before his father died, James junior was described a "farmer of Halwell", although some 20 years later the census shows he was an agricultural labourer. Possibly James senior had helped his son get started as a farmer, or when (if) he retired and felt his son had already had his share. It is noticeable that despite describing himself a "Yeoman" in his will…
