John SWAN

-
Name John SWAN Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 1 Nov 1819 Little Sampford, Essex, England - From censuses Little Sampford is also known as New Sampford
Also from baptism register
Baptised 13 Feb 1820 Independent Chapel, Finchingfield, Essex, England Gender Male Confirmation 18 Jun 1840 St. John’s Church, Thaxted, Essex, England - By Charles James Bloomfield, Bishop of London
From the PR for Little Sampford, on "Essex Archives Online", online image (23/12/2010)
The record shows John as aged 17. This is too young - unless John was a bit younger than censuses suggest - maybe he increased his age to be closer in age to Martha. Or should the PRs have said James?
Residence 1841 Wimbish Green, Uttlesford, Essex, England Living with parents Occupation 1841 Wimbish Green, Uttlesford, Essex, England Ag lab Occupation 1843 Thames Street, London, England Groom Occupation 1844 25, Addle Hill, London, England Groom Occupation From 1847 to 1859 Coachman - 1847: Maidenhead, Berkshire
1851: Taplow, Buckinghamshire
1854: Taplow House Lodge, Taplow, Buckinghamshire
1859: Grosvenor Crescent, Pimlico, London
Residence From 1851 to 1854 Taplow House Lodge, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, England - The grand Taplow House is now an hotel.
In 1838 it was bought by the (2nd) Marquess of Thomond, but on his death in 1846 the title passed to his brother who resided in Bath and in 1851 it was occupied by 65 year old merchant Joseph Sandars (1785 - 1860), "the father of railways", and his wife Anna.
Since the very next entry to the unnamed house that John and his family were living in in 1851 was Taplow House, I think it was probable that they were then living in the Lodge, and almost certain that they were living in a property that was part of the Taplow House estate and that John was a coachman to the Sandars.
Residence 1859 Grosvenor Crescent, Pimlico, London, England Occupation From 1871 to 1873 “The Feathers Inn”, Taplow Common, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, England Publican / inn keeper Died 7 Mar 1873 Taplow Common, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, England Cause: Liver disease ("disease of liver ascites 1 week") - John's death was registered by his son Charles who was present at the death (was also "of Taplow Common".
The cert. just shows that he died at Taplow Common; since this is in addition to showing him as "late of 'The Feathers'" I assume he did not die at The Feathers or a place of death would not have been added.

Notes - Living in Thames Street at time of 1st marriage.
Living in Taplow House Lodge in 1854 when his 1st wife died, but in Grosvenor Crescent (London) at time of 2nd marriage in 1859, still a coachman - possibly at his employer's London home, with Taplow being the country one? But the 1861 census shows a different family, the 43 year old Neville Ward and his wife and children, with "next door" a coachman, but that was Thomas Price, not John Swan. Possibly the Wards already had a coachman when they acquired Taplow House; John would have had to have found work elsewhere if the Sanders no longer needed him.
Back in Taplow, as innkeeper at The Feathers Inn (still exists - opposite the main gates to Cliveden) at the time of the 1871 census (where the entry for The Feathers is immediately followed by Cliveden estate entries). At "Taplow Common" (I think this would include The Feathers) when he died the following year.
