A WW1 draft registrationadds weight to this. The date is again shown as 2 May 1877, but next of kin as Mrs H Perkins (sister), resident in Old Kent Road.
Whilst I can't find a sister of John's to fit, his brother and sister-in-law, William Goatham and Louisa, were living in the Old Kent Road at the time of the 1911 census and Louisa's maiden name was Perkins.
