      From PR entry but dates not quite clear. Could be born 2nd Sep, baptised 29th October but alternatively could be born 29 Oct, baptised 4 Nov. The way the dates have been written I think the latter more likely, but such a small gap between birth and baptism would have been unusual, unless it was thought she might be close to death.

    • (Research)
      When I started researching Mary it was by going to the 'PRO' (now TNA) in London and seeing the census entries, in the late 1970s, and then visiting Margate and seeing a transcription of the PRs in the library, back in 1981. Small discrepencies made me uncertain whether the Mary Griggs who married Robert Hyde was the Mary Ann born and baptised in 1804. Now so much information is available online I am fairly confident this is the right Mary.

      Named as 'Mary' everywhere (marriage, children's baptisms, 1841-61 censuses, death cert and burial PR entry) apart from potential baptism. If I have the wrong baptism, then she may just be Mary not Mary Ann.

      Probable parents shown. Mary appears not to have been "of age" when she married so parental consent should have been needed but the marriage entry does not show it. However, it sems not to have been that uncommon for a girl to pass herself off as 'of age', and the ages in censuses agree with her being young enough to need consent. (The 1851 census gives an age a few months out for the Mary born 1804, but the age in 1861 is exactly right).

      Evidence against the parents shown::
      - bapt is for a Mary Ann, Ann never found in any other records (weak against - if always called Mary);
      - birth and bapt are in 1804, but 1851 census, death and burial records suggest 1803 (weak against - small discrepancies not uncommon, and the 1861 census does agree with birth in 1804);
      - no son called Charles (again weak against, many couples did not name children after all their parents).

      I did think Charles and Mary had another daughter to whom they gave the name Mary Ann in 1824; this would have been strong evidence against, by this time it was very rare for parents to give a 2nd child the same name as a living child. However, the evidence now points to this being the daughter of a different Charles and Mary Griggs.

      Evidence for the parents shown:
      - only Mary born close to 1803/4 with bapt at St. John's Margate - and 1851 and 1861 censuses show Mary as born Margate;
      - no Mary bapt close to 1803 in St. Peters (Broadstairs) or St. Lawrences (Ramsgate);
      - I have a DNA match with a descendant of Maria Griggs, sister of Charles Sladden Griggs. My relationship to the descendant appears to be 5th cousin once removed; it is 32 cM - larger than would be expected for this sort of relationship, but certainly possible. Significantly the match has researched all of their lines to some extent - most are in parts of the country where I have no ancestors, so unless there is an NPE, or some seriously erroneous research a Kent link is the most likely. Given that 32 cM is large for a 5c1r it gets significantly less likely if the match is a generation or 2 earlier.
      - the strongest evidence is probably the lack of evidence of another Mary:

      What happened to Mary Ann Griggs born 1804 if she didn't marry Robert?
      i.e. is there any other marriage or a burial that could be her?

      Not only have I found no other baptism that could be that of this Mary (which could possibly be explained by an accidental omission, or it being in a non-conformist church whose register does not survive) but more significantly I have found no burial (or death registration) that could be that of the Mary Griggs born 1804 is she did not marry, nor any other marriage to fit.
      Research includes looking at Marys of about the right age (age indicating born 1802-1808), born Margate, according to the 1851 census; where they were not living on Thanet in 1851 then as they might well have married some distance away (most falling into the category were living in the London conurbation) I looked for the maiden name (from the birth registration of a child or children, when possible, or else the name at the time of a likely marriage). A couple had common surnames or were widows without any family in 1851 and I did not investigate thoroughly.
      The chance is therefore slim that the Mary Hyde born Margate in 1804 married some distance away and so has escaped detection.

      No other likely Mary found to be the one who married in 1823, no other fate found for the one born in 1804, it seems safe to conclude the two were almost certainly the same Mary.
