"ELSEWHERE Eric Malpass, English novelist LONDON (AP) - Eric Malpass, whose novels about English country life were widely popular in Germany and elsewhere in Europe but almost unknown in his own country, has died. He was 85. He died at Bishop's Waltham 60 miles southwest of London on Oct. 16, his family reported. Malpass worked for a British bank for 39 years, writing short stories and his first novel in his spare time. Beefy Jones was published in 1957 and won the Palma d'Oro in Italy for the best humorous novel of the year. His second novel was Morning's At Seven. Unaccepted in Britain at the time, it was translated and published by a German publishing house and became a 1966 bestseller."
