Did William marry once or two or three times?
The picture is unclear. Certainly a 34 year old Elizabeth Gale was buried in West Teignmouth on 23 Jan 1821, and who would threfore have been about 5 years younger than William and about 20 when they married. It seems likely she was William's wife, especially as when a child of William was baptised in December that year the mother was named as Mary. All six earlier children had the mother's name given as Elizabeth. The 1841 census also names William's wife as Mary (or at least, the woman in the same house of a similar age was Mary Gale - of course this could, in theory, have been a sister or cousin).
Whilst this seems straightforward I have not found a marriage for a William and Mary in 1821 that could be theirs, and the 1851 census names William's wife as Elizabeth. Was this a third wife? I can't find a death registration or burial of a Mary between 1841 and 1851 (the Mary Ann who death was registered in Newton Abbot RD in 1846 was aged only 27). William was buried in West Teignmouth churchyard so we might expect his wife would have been too, but the only likely Mary was buried there in 1857, aged 78 i.e. the same age as the 'Elizabeth' who was with William at the time of the 1851 census. William was a widower in 1861 so 'Elizabeth' had died, but there is no death registration or burial of an Elizabeth between 1851 and 1861 that fits. Hence I don't think William was married 3 times, I think that 'Elizabeth' in 1851 was the same woman who was elsewhere recorded as Mary. But now the question is was 'Elizabeth' a mistake, or was she actually Mary Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Mary)? She would have been born about 1776, when two Christian names was uncommon (apart from Mary Ann). 'Mary's son was given the middle name Baker, the maiden name of William's first wife, and so could indicate she was still his wife. On the other hand, if Elizabeth had died then William and Mary got together pretty quickly after the death. The most likely explanation for such a quick relationship is that a sister moved in to keep house and look after the children. If the sister was Elizabeth's then her maiden name would also be Baker, and hence it would be natural to use that name for her son.
I think William probably married twice, but will look for baptism evidence of sisters Mary and Elizabeth or of a Mary Elizabeth / Elizabeth Mary.
