    • From the 1871 census where shown as aged 5

William's birth appears not to have been registered as William - a William Wetton whose birth was registered q4 1864 had a mother's maiden name of Caddy, a William registered q3 1865 has no mother's maiden name shown in the index, suggesting he was illegitimate. No Williams registered in the area in 1866 or 1867.

However, there was the birth of a Charles registered who would appear to be a child of George and Caroline:
GRO ref: WETTON, Charles q2 1865  Stafford RD 6b 25; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as WheatNot only is Charles not with George and Caroline in 1871, but there is no death of a Charles Wetton registered between 1865 and 1871. I think it likely that Charles and William were one and the same. Where the error is I do not know.

    • GRO ref: WETTON, George to WEATE, Catherine q3 1844 Uttoxeter RD 17 233Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 19 Mar 2018)

Although recorded as Catherine not Caroline in the marriage register I do believe this marriage is the right one. George and Caroline seem to have been quite relaxed regarding details: ages (particularly theirs, but to a lesser extent their childrens), birthplaces, birth registrations and even the names of their children. The births of 3 of their first 5 children seem to have gone unregistered, and whilst all of the remaining 7 were in two cases the names subsequently found in the censuses are not those with which they are registered. The names have been found in two different indexes of the GRO copy, so it does not seem to be an indexing error. In addition, the names in the GRO indexes are the same as in an index of the Staffordshire originals, so it does not appear to be an error in making the GRO copies.
It is just possible there was another male Wetton married to a female Wheat, but I cannot find such a marriage, and though that could be because the wife had married as a widow I should then be able to find the children in the census but I cannot (and there are no deaths registered between the births and the next census). Once I would have assumed to be a registrars error, but with two instances I wonder if George and Caroline hadn't made up their minds about names when the births were registered. Perhaps George was out and didn't like the name Caroline had chosen. Maybe, though, the local registrar was a bit scatty.
I have only seen one census entry for William / Charles, so it could be an ennumerator error, but I have seen Agnes in three censuses, always as Agnes despite her birth registration showing Emily.

Another puzzle is the unnamed female whose birth was registered in q4 1855. Mostly unnamed birth registrations seem to be for babies who died soon after birth and were never named. However, in this case no death registration seems to have followed. Maybe she was given a name before dying.
