  • Name John CHUBB
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Gender Male
Property From 1766 to 1844  Seven Star Lane, Plymouth, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Leases
    • The following all relate to a John Chubb with property in Seven Star Lane (later known as Stillman Street). Most refer to him as a painter, which is the occupation given for this John when he married Caroline. The third refers to him as 'the younger', so the earlier entries may be for 'the older' - probably his father.

In 1766 a lease for 100 years was arranged between 1) Joseph Kerly of Maker, Cornwall, gentleman and 2) John Chubb of Plymouth, painter for a Dwelling house and courtilage in Seven Star Lane, behind the Mitre Inn Rent: £6 6s per annum.
(PWDRO Ref: 570/47, PWDRO catalogue entry)

In 1770 a Lease and counterpart for 99 years between 1) John Collier of Plymouth, cooper and 2) John Chubb of Plymouth, painter - Two messuages near Seven Star Lane, also adjoining garden.
(PWDRO Ref: 570/48 (a and b), PWDRO catalogue entry)

In 1774 Mortgage between 1) John Chubb the younger of Plymouth, painter and 2) George Woollcombe of Plymouth, esquire - Two messuages near Seven Star Lane, also adjoining garden Consideration: £100.
(PWDRO Ref: 570/49, PWDRO catalogue entry)

In 1783 lease for residue of 99 years or life and Counterpart lease between 1) John Collier and 2) John Chubb - Two messuages near Seven Star Lane, also adjoining garden Consideration: £10 10s Rent: £1 9s per annum.
(PWDRO Ref: 570/50 (a and b), PWDRO catalogue entry)

In 1799, lease and release between 1) Orlando Manley of Plymouth, esquire, and Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Artillery 2) John Chubb of Plymouth, painter - Two messuages near Seven Star Lane, also adjoining garden.
(PWDRO Ref: 570/51 (a and b), PWDRO catalogue entry)

John Chubb 'the younger' must have been elderly if not dead by 1844; I think this most likely refers to a different John, maybe a son.

In 1844: agreement to build a wall to split the courtilage (hereafter property of William Collier) and the passage (hereafter property of John Chubb ) of a messuage in Stillman Street.
(PWDRO Ref: 570/53, PWDRO catalogue entry)

    Painter
    • At the time of his marrige
    Miscellaneous 1804
    Signed certificate for pub
    • I think the following could well refer to this John Chubb.

Certificate signed by several principal inhabitants of the borough of Plymouth that William Alford is a proper person to keep a victualling or public house. Names include: Joseph Cookworthy, John [Tucker], John Ball, Thomas Moysey and John Chubb.

(at PWDRO in Plymouth Borough records: victuallers and victualling [inns or public] houses, ref. 1/707/2/20, catalogue entry)
Buried 29 Mar 1811  Charles Church, Plymouth, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • The burial register gives no information beyond his name.

      Is it the right burial?
A John who was buried in Plymouth in 1796 is recorded as 'John son of John Chubb'; one who was buried in 1809 is recorded an an infant. A John who was buried in 1837 has an aged shown implying he was born in 1761, i.e. about 14 years younger than Caroline. Possible, but he died in the workhouse which seems unlikely for this John Chubb.
The burial shown here has no clarifying information in the register. Given that he appears to have had property one would expect John to have left a will, and an inland revenue copy survives dated 1813. This could well be probate or another date other than when the will was written, and so could be the same John as the 1811 burial.

The only thing against this being the burial of this John is that he was buried at Charles Church rather than St. Andrews; his marriage, his daughter's baptism and his widow's burial were all at St. Andrews.
