"Real Distress
To the Generous and Humane.
The humble Petition of Wm. Gotham,
of Teignmouth, Fisherman; - Sheweth, - That
about three weeks since, while your Petitioner was
trawling for fish three miles from the shore, between
Dawlish and Teignmouth, a large Stone-boat about 70
or 80 tons burthen, ran down and sunk (during a violent
storm in the night,) the small Smack or Fishing-boat, in
which your Petitioner then was; by means whereof your
humble Petitioner not only lost his Boat and Tackle,
which have cost him at least 200l. [£200] but at the advanced age of 68 years, is entirely thrown out of Employment,
and the whole of his little property being destroyed, has
now no other means of procuring another Boat to obtain
a livelihood as heretofore, but through the kind and
generous assistance of those who shall be pleased to
bestow on him their charitable Donations, the smallest of
which will be received with gratitude.
William Gotham.

(Above donations amount to almost £30. I have not found any information about this - did William get enough money to get another boat, or did he find employment? His sister Elizabeth clearly helped him out in his old age (from 1827, when he was 76) by the provision in her will - had she helped him before this?

"September
M[arried] 12 Timothy Gotham & Patience Wallis"
Offspring - In 1757 a Nathaniel was baptised in West Teignmouth, the entry in the PR showing he was the son of Thomas and Patience, but there seems to have been no such couple!
I think Nathaniel must have been the son of Thomas and Martha or of this couple, Timothy and Patience.
The evidence seems more strongly weighted towards Nathaniel being the son of Thomas and Martha (see full argument for this on Nathaniel's page)
* Either way, the Nathaniel who married Elizabeth Whidbourne clearly was the son of Thomas and Martha. *
i.e. if the Nathaniel baptised in 1757 was the son of Timothy and Patience he probably died unmarried and childless.

It is clear that it was this William who married Johanna Bennett, as he was still living when his sister Elizabeth wrote her will in 1827, and she named him and also named several of his children.
