    • * Is this the right Edward? *
      It seems quite possible. Although Edward was of Berry Pomeroy when he married, a dearth of Shinners in that parish earlier in the century suggests Edward was from elsewhere. There were plenty in the neighbouring parish of Dartington. However, an 'Edward and Cherty' were having children baptised in Dartington in the 1650s and 1664. They had married in Cockington in 1653; unfortunately no parish is shown for either. It has to be more likely that the Edward who had children in Dartington was the one who had himself been baptised there.

      At this time, during the interregnum, marriages were civil events; those in the Totnes register are various shown as 'by mer Maior' or 'by mer Justice' - presumably the local Mayor or JP.

      Despite the surname discrepancy (Skinner instead of Shinner) there seem to be NO Skinner children following the marriage, nor baptisms of an Edward or Ann Skinner in the area.
