    Special Constabulary
    • I guess that 'Uncle Charlie' acted as a Special Constable throughout the Second World War, although I only know of him being one from the 1939 registration.

The idea of a part-time constable to assist in keeping law and order dates back to the Statute of Winchester of 1285, the role being extended by Charles II in 1673, who was concerned that attempts to enforce religious conformity might result in public disorder. Charles II therefore ruled that any citizen could be sworn in as a temporary peace-officer for a specific occasion, particularly when there was a threat of great disturbances.
A body similar to the one existing today came into existence at the beginning of World War One: a voluntary, part-time organisation, paid only their expenses. During the Second World War about 130,000 Special Constables acted as the wartime police reserve, supplemented by retired police officers recalled to duty to assist.

My grandmother was born in Brentford in 1900 but the family moved back to Devon when she was a baby. Here they all are, back in Stoke Fleming.

Charley Hambling with his brother - and who?
Judging from their ages I guess this was taken in the mid-1890s or later - since this photo was taken in Ealing I guess it was taken before the Hambling family returned to Devon by 1901.

Who was the soldier? A relation or just a friend?
Although both the parents of James and Charles Hambling were from Devon, they did have some relations in London. Several offspring of their grandmother's cousin William Kellond were living in Paddington at the same time as James and Charles and they had…
