Military Service In regular army including WW1
    • I was told that George was in the regular army by his first cousin, by Great Aunt Ivy (Stainton nee HAMBLING), who knew her Court cousins personally. The 1911 census confirms this and shows that  George was in the Middlesex Regiment, in 1911 based at Headley nr Alton, Hampshire in 1911.

He was a Drummer when saved by a Prayer Book during WW1. The Prayer Book was in his breast pocket and the bullet went into the Prayer Book rather than into George. It was on display in St. George's Church, Old Brentford. I wondered if it still was on display but discovered that this church has been redundant for some years. I enquired whether it was in the church of the parish now covering the area - it isn't, and reading about St. George's Church in notes at the London Metropolitan Archives I discovered it was badly damaged in WW2, so I expect the Prayer Book was lost then.

George's dau was born in Bristol registry district, so he was probably in the area in 1920, but he also died in Gloucestershire, in 1948, so the date of the photo is uncertain.

I know of no connection between George Court and Stonehouse, but it looks to me like the same person as in the signed photo of George.
