  • Name Mary WOGAN
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Est 1525  (probably), Selvinch, Whitelackington, Somerset, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Estimated from probable year of birth of her husband, and taking account the family, but she could have been born a few years earlier or later. (She can't have been born any earlier than 1520 as her mother's previous husband was still living at least at the start of the year from 22 Apr 1520).
Her father's will, written in 1558, shows he had a daughter Phillipp then unmarried but Phillipp could have been a good bit younger than Mary.
An earlier date and her Turbervile children must have been from a marriage prior to that to Robert Morgan, but if she were younger then that marriage could have been for some of the time between 1567 (when Robert Morgan died) and 1575 (by when her mother's will shows she was married to William Stourton). Mary survived William Stourton but died a Stourton, so she can't have married a Turbervile after William's death.

Residence Bef 1545  Selvinch, Whitelackington, Somerset, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Date just an estimate. Both Mary's parents were of Selvinch when they died, and her father referred to his ancestors being buried in Whitelackington, indicating they hadn't recently moved to the parish, so it is probable that Mary grew up at Selvinch.
Residence Aft 1545  Mapperton House, South Mapperton, Dorset, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
Builder and Occupier - with husband Robert Morgan
    • Robert and Mary built Mapperton House, though others have added to it since.
There (is or was?) an inscription in the hall
"Robert Morgan and Mary his wife built this house,
In their own life time, at their own charge and cost.
What they spent, that they lent,
What they gave, that they have,
What they left, that they lost".

'Their' own expence (as opposed to 'Robert built .. at his expence') may be indicative of the importance of Mary's inheritance to the cost. Mary was a co-heir to her father, who had land etc. as tenant in chief in both Somerset and Wiltshire. I have yet to see the IPMs, so don't know how much property he owned (nor whether he had other property but not as tenant-in-chief, which seems likely) nor how many daughters this was divided between.

Sentence regarding the will 27 Jan 1596/97
    Religion Was Mary a recusant?
    • i.e. did she stick to the 'old religion' after the reformation? I suspect she did. Although I have not come across anything to suggest recucansy amongst the Morgans, both of Mary's other husbands probably had at least sympathies.
    Buried
    • No record of Mary's burial in the OPC transcript of Folke PRs
    Notes
    • (Research):Who was Mary?
Mary was described as daughter in the will of Agnes Wogan (1575), and made executrix. She was not mentioned in the will of Agnes' husband John (written 1558). It would not be safe to assume that the lack of a mention means that she was not the daughter of John. He does mention a daughter, but only to leave her a marriage portion; since Mary would already have received one he may have felt no need to mention her.

However, I do think it probable that Agnes had been married before she married John Wogan, to a Cuthbert Rosse, and so in theory Mary could have been a daughter of that marriage. (Of course it is possible that Agnes had had more than one marriage before she married John Wogan).

However I have seen the name Wogan is recorded for Mary in several places, and importantly these include n the Morgan pedigree in the 1565 visitation of Dorset by William Harvey,  in the edited version by Walter Metcalfe (1887). This shows the 1565 visitation as recording Robert's wife as 'Mary, da. and heir of John Wogan of Sylwynche co, Somerset'. Mary would still have been alive at this time, so whilst some of the earlier information in the visitation may not be reliable I think it is safe to say that Mary was the daughter of John Wogan as well as of Agnes his wife.

    • John Roos was living at at least the start of the year from 22 Apr 1520, as he is named as a defendant in a case in the Court of Requests that year.
However, in a Chancery Court case no later than 1529 Agnes' husband was named as John Ogan.

Family 2 TURBERVILE,   d. Yes, date unknown
    Married
    • In her will Mary refers to her Turbervile children, so would appear to have been married to a Turbervile. I don't know if this was before her marriage to Robert Morgan, or between her marriage to him and that to William Stourton.

Family 3 William STOURTON, Esq.,   b. Bef 1529, (probably), Stourton, Wiltshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location,   d. Abt 15 Mar 1589/90  (Age ~ 61 years)
    Married Between 1567 and 30 Apr 1575
    • Mary's son Christopher Morgan refers to 'Mary Sturton my mother' in his will, confirming that his mother remarried to a St(o)urton.
The will of the Mary widow of William Stourton of Worminster shows she had a son William Morgan, so would seem to be the right Mary Stourton.
She had remarried to William Stourton by the time her mother wrote her will, and it was Mary who proved it.
Despite William's interesting life it is worth noting that according to the History of Parliament website William led a quiet life for twenty years after 1559, this being the period in which William and Mary must have married, and in his last years was troubled by suspicion of disobedience in matters of religion - William being a recusant.
