Name Thomas BEATON Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Sep Q 1845 Felpham, Sussex, England - born Chichester according to 1891 census.
GRO ref: Beaton, Thomas q3 1845 Westhampnett RD 7 508; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Wethers
Baptised 14 Sep 1845 St. Mary the Virgin Church, Felpham, Sussex, England Felpham Font
The font, made of Wealden marble, may be contemporary with the rebuilding of the church circa 1100.
Even allowing for it being made for babies to be baptised by being immersed in water, the bowl is particularly large. The four sides have cut arcades; the carving is crudely done, and is probably local work.
Fonts are usually by church doors, and this one was until the late 1970s, when it was moved as well as being restored.
(information from "Guide to the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin…Gender Male Petty sessions Meat stolen from Thomas 1870 Havant, Hampshire, England - Unusually for a Beaton, Thomas was a victim of crime rather than the perpetrator!report to be transcribed
Occupation Labourer From 1871 to 1891 Poor Law Resident in the workhouse 1881 The Union Workhouse, Havant, Hampshire, England - Thomas and Ellen and their 7 oldest children were in the workhouse at the time of the 1881 census
Petty sessions Failing to send children to school 24 Oct 1885 Havant, Hampshire, England - Thomas, summoned with 5 others, was fined 5s. for neglecting to send a child to school (it's not clear from the newspaper item whether it was one or more children. Three people were fined 5s. but the other 3 only 2s. 6d. which may indicate that it was more than one)
Reported in the Portsmouth Evening News - Monday 26 October 1885, p.2
Occupation Labourer for a barge owner 1911 Langstone, Hampshire, England Died Sep Q 1915 Havant Reg Dist, Hampshire, England - GRO ref: q3 1915 Havant RD 2b 455 (age given as 69)
Notes - Haven't found in 1861 census;
with wife and oldest 2 children at no 1 Hock Heath Field, Bedhampton in 1871 (another family in same hse);
in 1881 in the workhouse in Havant - wife and oldest 7 children also there - am assuming Julia & Annie are his children as listed with his other offspring in the workhouse.
See http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Havant
Living in West Street, Havant in August 1890 when he registered his father's death (made his mark);
with wife and 8 children at Bankhampton (Selborne Rd?), Havant in 1891(W,TC,D,E,DM,E,A,E).
Must be the son who was quoted when his mother was admitted to the HCLA in 1899 - living in Clarendon Rd., Havant (his bro Edward lived in Portsmouth)
? 1901
In 1911 the family were living in the 5 -roomed Gun Cottage, Langstone, Havant. With Thomas and Ellen were just 3 of their children: Charles (a widower) - presumably this is Thomas Charles -, Daisy and Eva. Also present was a 6 yr old niece Mable. The 1911 shows Thomas and Ellen as having had 14 children, of whom only 2 had died by 1911.

Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 28 Oct 2017)
Looked through all Beatons whose births were registered in Havant RD or with Oakshott or similar sounding, 1865-1899, and found no others with an Oakshott or similar mother's maiden name than the 12 shown here (no mother's maiden name shown for Albert), so I don't know the identity of the 14th child, referred to in the 1911 census. Maybe they had a child before they married, or a still born child who they counted but whose birth would not have been registered. (I didn't check Beetons)
